What is your BMI? It's more about your BMI than your weight alone. My insurance does allow high cholesterol as a co morbidity but I have normal cholesterol.

Hi Jen.

Every insurance is different so you will have to check your insurance. I have Empire BCBS and they did not count my high cholesterol as a co-morbid condition. They did accept my high bp. Many insurance companies want more than 1 comorbid condition. My weight was around the same as yours when I was finally approved. They approved me only when I needed surgery on my foot, which the doctor's office convince them was related to my weight. This made them overturn my denial and accept the band surgery. I was banded on 9/17/10.

Your insurance probably has a bariatric medical policy that is probably posted on their website. If it is hard to find, call them up and have the customer service rep take you to it and discuss your policy with them. I did that but still got a denial, which was eventually overturned.

Best of luck with your insurance. Don't give up without a fight. The fight paid off in my case and in many others that I have heard. Weight loss surgery actually makes healthier patients so it is a win-win situation for everyone involved (both insurance and patient). I'm not sure why there are so many insurance denials at first. Maxi

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
