Total restriction (suddenly)?

Recommended Posts

I have been banded for four years and all has gone well. (I have lost over 100 lbs) Suddenly I can't eat or even swallow liquids. This has been going on for 3 days, and I keep thinking it will all go back to normal. Has anyone experienced this and if so, did it magiacally go back to "normal"?

I am new at this was(banded 10/27/10) but I had a friend that this happened too and it sounds like your band may have slipped. You need to call your doctor and have him to do an x-ray or ultra sound. Good luck.

I agree it could be a slip, call your doc ASAP! If you cannot get liquids down, it is especially important that you get in right away!

Please call your surgeon, now.

I've not had this happen, but it sounds like descriptions of a slipped band. Call your doctor, even tonight.

Best wishes to you.

Thanks everyone. I have moved 15 hours away from my doctor, so first thing tomorrow am I will find a new doctor and see what we can do. In the meantime, hopefully all will go back to normal. It has to!!! I learned last month I have breast cancer and am scheduled for a double mastectomy the day after Thanksgiving.......UGH!!!!!!

I've learned that stress limits my ability to eat and keep food down. Funny coming from someone who used to handle stress with food.< /p>

You definitely have some stress going on in your life.

I agree, find a doctor, but don't fret about a slip-99% of what we worry about with the band (and much of life) never happens.

I wish you peace!

I agree, it may be stress- hoepfully that is the case. I will call the Dr (its not 8 am here yet) and i think at the very least i am going to have my band emptied for the surgery so i wont have any restricitons post breast op. that way i will have one less thign to worry about (restriction). thanks everyone for all your kind thoughts. i'll keep you posted!

Well, went to a doctor ($300 later) and had all my complete fill removed (3.2 cc's) Phew. What a relief. I actually drank 1/2 bottle of Water on the way home!!! The doctor did say that when people suffer extreme/acute trauma (ie: loss of a loved one, finds out some is extremely ill, etc...), that your mind actually has the power to shut down your stomach and it's ability to function correctly.

I am guessing that is what happened to me. Having just found out i have breast cancer, and anticipating my huge surgery next week, my body was (is) freaking out. Oddly enough, I am at a little more ease now. Hopefully i can eat some food now! She did warn me that now that i dont have any restriciton at all, to be CAREFUL...the pounds can sneak back on slowly.

thanks everyone for the input-- and for those of you reading this thread and are "shut down" (cant eat anything)--try to relax, get some fill removed and all should be well. It may not be a slip afterall :-)

Glad to hear the unfill helped. Did he do an upper GI to check the band at all? I don't think an unfill would help a slip.

I wish you all the best with the upcoming surgery and treatment.

Cocoabean, my doctor didn't do an upper GI- I actually didnt wnat to pay for one. It was an emergency visit and they were going to charge me $700, so I just asked to have my band totally drained to see if that would solved the problem and IT DID! The band did not slip after all, it was my nerves shutting down my stomach and not allowing me to eat, creating total restriction.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
