surgery wed and chickening out!!

Recommended Posts

I already cancelled a dr appt 1 time, but then decided to go for it. My surgery is in 3 days and I feel like I want to cancel it. I have it in my head that I will never really be able to eat again. How much do people really eat after having it done? Do you feel deprived? Please help!

Yes you will be able to eat most things but in smaller quantities. You shouldn't feel deprived because that is when the band comes into play. You might be hungry at first because you will be on liquids for awhile.. but it's important to stick with that as your stomach will be swollen and needs time to heal.

Good luck! :)

No I don't feel deprived. I eat enough to not be hungry and I eat a wide variety of foods. It is normal to be nervous at this stage but once you are on the other side you will be thinking 'hell I wish I had this done sooner"!

All the best.

Come on now ! Now you want to back out because you might feel deprived. This is a lifestyle change, I ' and everyone thats banded said second thoughts did'nt happen before surgery. I challenge you to think about how deprived you feel from life right now in this moment? The band will help you eat and be satisfied with the required mini meals that are ahead of you. You will feel empowered to leave LACK of control in your past.

Don't chicken out. I was banded 2 days ago and it was no big deal. I went into the Surgical Pavillion at 6:45 am and was home by 1:00 pm. I would have been home about an hour sooner but my husband was at a doctors appt and they were running behind. Feels like I did a bunch of situps. I'm going to write on my blog so check it out if you want to know what happened.

Good Luck!

go ahead and get the band and get through the post-op period where you do have to stay on modified foods for a bit (liquids then soft things then regular). You don't have to start "using it" (getting fills) until you are ready. This is not the way most people approach it, but it is one way.

I am not deprived at all. I've always been able to eat anything I really wanted to eat. I just eat less.

In fact now, when I look at the 3oz of Protein and 1/2 cup of veggies I think it looks like a lot of food. I couldn't imagine thinking that before banding. Before banding 3oz & 1/2 cup sounded like starvation. :)

Now when I see my dh & kids serve their plates I'm shocked at how much they can eat.

Get the surgery, get past the healing stage and then take it from there. Try not to talk yourself out of this over food issues.

Or are you feeling something weird about your surgeon and/or staff? If that's the case, you might want to interview another surgeon right quick.

Marisas, I hope you feel calmer today. I am right there with you sharing all those same fears and anxieties. Something that has helped when I start to panic, I tell myself "It's only food!" I just say it a few times to myself. Life is great, I'm in love, I have 3 great sons, my dog is my buddy, the trees are colorful, the fall air feels great, Christmas is coming and I get to focus on loved ones, decorations and gifts, NOT FOOD! Just redirect your thoughts.

ANother thing, I found a book called On THe Bandwagon that has been helpful.

And getting my post surgery supplies and groceries has kept me busy, I'm a big list maker and organizer.

I was banded on 09/08/10. I think you should do it. I've been lucky and not had any problems with food afterwards. Honestly, I have to remind myself to stop eating, but I've been able to eat anything I want. I measure out small portions and it works fine. When we order Chinese food or something, I can get at least three meals out of each to-go box.

Go for it. You can do it! Feel free to private message or "friend me" on here, if you'd like.

I am getting banded on 11-22 and I have had moments of doubt as well. This medifast diet is killing me but I know that I have to do it to help make the surgery safer. I am expecting that it will be a few weeks until I can eat normal foods again. Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
