Hello

I'm scheduled to be banded in early December. Although I have spent the last 3-4 yrs researching lap band and mostly feel confident with my decision, I still have some nagging doubt lingering. Mostly, I am actually going to lose the weight, and keep it off? I'm just putting that out there and "voicing" my concerns. Maybe this is just pre surgery worry...

Also I'm concerned that losing weight/lap band is going to become an obsession. Now my obsession is food and eating. Will my new sole focus be my band and the scale? This scares me a little. I just want to be at a normal healthy weight and live a normal life, without trading one obsession for another. Does that make sense? I read the good, the bad and the ugly on these posts and so badly want to be a success and turn my life around -- get out of this fat suit forever.

Have you had your psych eval yet? If after 3-4 yrs researching the lapband & still have lingering doubt... I think you might be trading your obsessions. IMO it appears that a large percentage of lapbanders have an obsession with the scale& they weigh daily, sometimes several times a day! Personally I think that is a setup for frustation & possibly failure. You have a low bmi,not a huge amt of wt. to lose, get the surgery done, stay off the scale until MD visits. If you want to be obsessed with something, make it following your MD's instructions.

Hey Scoobie,

I was banded on September 27, 2010, and have never looked back. I've lost 39 pounds as of today and feel so much better! I have not exercised everyday but have now joined a fitness club and doing much better.

I believe the feelings you are having are absolutely normal. I went into this like a locomotive and just laid track as I moved forward. I admit, I had some second thoughts and some fears, particularly about the anesthesia, but the more I researched this area, the more I realized that there was really very little to fear. The area of anesthesia has advanced so much in the last few years that there are really few complications.

I have absolutely no regrets and would do it again without hesitation. I can't really advise you on what you should do, but just know that the feelings you are having are completely normal. The only piece of advice I can offer is, if you decide to have the surgery, don't look back once you have it done. Just look forward with this new opportunity and do the best you can.

I wish you the very best with your decision.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
