Hypo-Thyroidism and Weight Loss....?

Recommended Posts

Hi :smile2:

I'm scheduled for surgery in January and I'm just curious how those with hypo-thyroidism are making out with their lap-band...?

I know how slowly I lose weight NOW with it - (I also have type II Diabetes controlled by metformin).

I'd love to hear from all of you that have this thyroid disorder to see how you're making out or how you've made out...

Thanks

renee

Hi,

I am getting banded on Nov. 15th. I have Hypothyroid problems and am very hopeful this will help me lose this weight. I have tried for 5 years without surgery and have had no luck. I will keep you posted as my journey starts soon.:smile2:

Hello there, welcome and congratulations to taking your first step to the new you. I have Hoshimotos which is one of the most common reasons for hypothyroidism. Though I was just banded on November 2, 2010, I am feeling great. With the pre and post diet I have lost a total of 20lbs already.

My Endocronologist did tell me that because of the thyroid my weight loss might be slower then others and have a tendancy to plateau at times. Those were all mights and to just stay focused. I also have PCOS (Poly cystic ovaries) all things that contribute to weight gain and difficulty in weight loss. This was my last hope and my doctors both Dr. Gedeon who did the surgery, my Endo Dr. Luthra and my OBGYN doctor (they keep changing doctors on me) all suggested that this was my best option. They are all very positive and tell me before I know it, there will be a new me looking at me in the mirror. I don't believe three independent opinions would lie. I am so excited for me and for you!

I am hypothyroid and have PCOS, and though I was prepared for very slow weight loss or not losing as much as I wanted, I am thrilled with my results. From the time I hit my sweet spot until I reached goal, I never hit a plateau; I lost more some weeks than others, but I always lost!

I had throid cancer and so have no thyroid at all now. I use synthroid everyday. My loss has been great, 86 pounds in about 9 months. I am still losing at about a pound a week. I have not found that the thyroid problem has slowed my down at all. However you must exercise.

When I'm focusing, I lose between 7-10 pounds a month. There have been some months when I've lost 4 pounds and some months when I've lost almost 20. I am really not compliant when it comes to taking pills, but I recently started taking my synthroid again. Not sure if its helping or not, but I hope it is. I also exercise a lot. But I haven't really felt the effects of my hypothyroidism in my weightloss and I'm happy with the way its going.

I too have hypothyroidism. I've had it for 15 years now. I'm losing great. So far I haven't noticed that it's slowing me down at all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
