Food Question. If it doesn't agree, should you go back to the previous stage?

Recommended Posts

I started Phase 3 of my post-op diet, which is the pureed phase. I was so glad to be able to eat something a little more substantial, especially since being sick with bronchitis. On Friday night, I pureed some chicken and some green beens, which are both allowed. I had 1 oz of each (took small bites and ate very slowly) and thought it was the best thing I've ever put in my mouth - that is until I woke up around 3:00 AM. Since then, I feel like I have so much gas in my chest and abdominal area. My abdomen even seems a little swollen/bloated. I keep using the Gas-X strips, but it hasn't helped alot. Yesterday I stuck to liquids, but had part of a sweet potato today and my chest is hurting again. My question is: Since I don't seem to be tolerating this very well, should I move back to a liquid diet for a few more days? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.:smile2:

Hi there,

Well, the best thing to do is to ask your doctor. :smile2: My surgery was July 3rd, so I will give you my two cents..

My doc said that sometimes it takes a lil while for your body to adjust, and you still might be a little bit swollen. He said that if I had issues going to the next phase that I should go back to liquids for a day or two (I know, now what you wanted to hear..sorry) :) Especially if your doc put Fluid in your band during surgery.

I would suggest going back to liquids, and then trying again. If you are still having issues, then I would call the doc for suggestions.

Hope this helps!! Hang in there

I don't have any Fluid in my band yet, but going back to the previous stage just made sense to me. I think I am going to stick with liquids for the rest of the day and give them a call tomorrow. When you think about it...I'm sure the chicken and green Beans, even though pureed, were quite a shock to my body. Thanks for your advice.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
