Turned away for cheating

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been turned away for cheating just a little on their pre-op diet. I have cheated like 5 days out of the 14 that I am on my diet but nothing to intense just like a chicken nugget here or there and a can a Soup but nothing intense I am on day 11 of my pre op diet and has lost 15 lbs so far. I only have 4 more days left but I am afraid that because I had just small slip ups my surgeon might turn me away.

I've heard that people who had the band done at my surgery were turned away on the day of their operation.

If you're on a diet to shrink your liver (Optifast, etc) it's probably best you stick to it. It increases risks if you don't follow the diet. If your liver is too big, it can be hard to operate.

All of the pre-op diets are so different. Mine was shakes during the day and Soup for supper, so I'm thinking your soup that you ate isn't going to harm you. You have others on here that were allowed a sensible meal at dinner. You have lost weight, and that is what the doctor is looking for. You even have people on here that don't even have to do a pre-op diet. My surgeon told me that they have done over 3000 procedures, and they have never had any body turned away.

ETA - Now having said that, don't go crazy. Stick to your diet. It will help you in the end to stick to it. I know my pre-op diet helped the cravings for sweets and carbs to go away.

Since you have lost weight probably not. I would however go to Youtube and watch real surgeries so you understand why you need to follow the post op diet requirements. They are not so much about loosing weight but healing your stomach. I would say staying on the post op diet is even more important than the preop diet. You can not "cheat" on the post op diet because it can cause you serious damage. I even read a post on here once that someone like 2 weeks after surgery ate two (yes) 2 Big Macs.

My clinic doesn't have a preop diet and he's done the band on people weighing over 400 pounds. Can't hurt to lose some excess bloat pre-surgery though.

I don't know how a doctor could turn a patient away since there's no way of knowing how much they've cheated. We all lose at different rates of speed. For example, I once went on an Optifast liquid diet of 800 calories for a month and lost *nothing*.

I'm not encouraging you to not do the pre-surgery diet. You will feel much better if you're not bloated going into surgery.

I know my doctor will not do the surgery if he goes in and the liver has not shrunk a significant amount. If there is a danger to your life because your liver is too large, they will not operate.

That being said, I was on a meat and veggie pre op diet. I had two or three chips and a few bites of bread. I did not eat an entire roll or anything. I was cautious and did things for tastes. One night I forgot and was out with the kids and ordered soda. I started drinking it and munching on fries with them and was like, "oops," I tossed the soda and made a mental note not to do that again.

Remember the pre op diet is for your safety just as much as to kick start the weight loss.

My Dr required me to sign a form saying that if he started the surgery and saw (based on stomach and intestine contents) that I had not followed the pre op diet, he would sew me up, not install the band and keep my $10K. That was enough for me to follow the diet to the letter.

Most people will tell you that the pre-op diet is intended to shrink the liver... and it is. Trust me you want that to happen. It keeps the procedure from becoming an open procedure. My surgeon told me after the operation, that he could tell I pretty much stuck to the pre-op diet... and for the most part I did. My only cheats were a few cucumber slices and three Pork rinds over a 16 day period. I know all the pre-op diets are challenging... but do your best to stick to it.

I stuck strictly to my pre-op diet and did not eat one crumb of food. I was so disappointed when I got to the surgery center the day of surgery to find out I only lost 6 lbs in 14 day! The doctor told me that it was okay because everyone loses differently and the only reason for the pre-op was to shrink the liver to make it easier on him to do the surgery. So, hang in there - you should be fine.

i'm a low bmi bandster and was told i needed to be on the pre-surgery diet but i just couldn't stomach the food they gave. i didn't lose any weight but being self-pay my doctor probably didn't care.

I know that a friend of mines had it done and on the day she went she said they take blood work. On the same day she went a man went to and he got turned away...so i am just hoping that my few small cheats don't cause me to not get my surgery....

Well I did not have a pre-op diet, but then again I was self pay! Plus they moved up my surgery date so I pretty much only had less that 24 hours of liqueds! Funny, I guess it was the money talking!

I had a 4 week pre op diet. The risk was if my Liver didn't shrink enough the procedure would not be able to be done "key Hole" and they would do a full open procedure - this happened to my sister for Gastric bypass - and she was cut from sternum to bikini line plus two other small incisions where they tried to do it key hole. I was lucky that i responded well to the pre op diet and despite a little cheating lost 11 - 12 kilos (my scales and the doctors do not agree). Seeing what my sister went through was good motivation as well.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
