What is eating you???

Recommended Posts

Did anyone see this show What is eating you?, last night on E!. There was this lady that said she had the gastric banding done and has now become bulimic. I missed some parts of the story, if anyone saw the show I would really appreciate if you can fill me in. The ladies name was Mona, I did notice she was still overweight.

One more thing I wanted to add, was that the Mona's doctor said she was at risk for her esophagus to rupture. Is this true for lap band patients? And if so does this mean that we are at risk for our esophagus to rupture if we are throwing up everytime something gets stuck. I find that I have to throw up at least once a day because something get stuck. It is the weirdest thing, I can eat a 2 cups of popcorn, but I can't get a yogert to go down; I don't know why this happens to me.

I've never heard of people using the band to make themselves sick before.

Throwing up with the band terrifies me. Having things slightly stuck is bad enough and makes me feel horrible.

I hope that girl is doing better now. She's very brave to go onto that show and even though I didn't see it, I heard she did it to help people. That's pretty cool of her.

I've had my band for a year and I can sort of see how bulemia comes into it. Every time I even sort of reach any sort of restriction, I can't keep anything down and end up throwing up 7-8 times a day. For me it's either restricted or not; there is no middle ground. I've not lost any weight since my surgery a year ago, but now I'm to the point where I just want them to fill me to where I just can't eat. Yes, I'll be miserable but I'm miserable now. Plus I'm so broke because of the cost of the surgery, I really can't afford food anymore. Too tight to eat is starting to look pretty good.

I did see it. I watch that show ALL the time. She told the Dr she throws up 20 times a day. She would eat bowls full of sausage gravy and mashed potatoes with sticks of butter as well as ice cream sandwiches three at one time. She stated she was a binge eater her whole life she can't stop eating once she starts. So she would eat so much to where she had to throw it up. The Dr said her esophagus could rupture from the throwing up which is common in bulimia after excessive long period of vomiting. She had been doing it for 5 years. She ended up doing awesome she started to eat fruit and veggies and she said she allowed the band to work as it should. by end of taping she had lost 32 pounds!!! It was so great to watch her recover as she is so beautiful!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
