Muscle Milk Question

Recommended Posts

So, i've been taking smoothie King's Protein powder, "Gladiator," which is nice. It has only 180 calories per serving (two scoops), less than 1 carb, and 42 grams of Protein i believe..

Anyway, i decided to pick up some Muscle Milk to start using both. I've been seeing a lot of negative reviews about using it with gaining muscle and especially weight loss because of the large amounts of calories it has.

Muscle Milk has 300 calories per serving (2 scoops) with 12 fats, and 25 protein(?) . The fats are better than what everyone will think, but i don't feel like explaining the types of fats and stuff.

I guess my question is, are the "large" amount of calories really a big problem if i'm either (A) using only 1 scoop for a drink, or ( having the two scoop serving, giving me 300 calories for my meal.

If i have a 300 calorie Breakfast and a 300 calorie lunch, and eat a sensible dinner, is that still what people would consider "Large amounts of calories?" OR Am are people not looking at the fact that it is Meal Replacement rather than a snack?

Any thoughts would help, because i'm wanting to build up muscle, but mainly lose the weight. :)

I think 300 calories for 25 g of Protein is really high. Premier RTD from costco is 160 calories for 30 g of protein. Gold Standard brand whey isolate powder is like 120 cal for 24 g of protein. I understand what your saying about the level of calories not being that bad if you are staying under 1000 a day. For me if I drank 300 calories I would be hungry in a few hours. Based on that I would rather have 150 calories at 8 and then another 150 cal. a couple hours later.

I drink the ready made muscle milk shakes which is 230 calories and 25g of Protein. I don't drink it as a snack, but as a Meal Replacement since its really hard for me to eat solid food in the morning/early afternoon. My guide for calorie/protein ratios is 1g of Protein for every 10 calories (so the ready to go MM has a little bit more protein than that). Ive never had powder MM but it seems like there are 70 extra calories for the same amount of protein, which is not so great. However, honestly, if there is room in your daily calorie goal for the extra 70 calories, then go for it. Calories are calories. I only have 850-900 calories a day so I try to make the most of them (both with protein and also with just generally feeling satisfied and not hungry).

I just ordered the premier Protein Shakes (the ones you can get from costco...Im a sam's club member so i just got them from the premier website) because I heard that they taste like chocolate milk and the calorie/protein ratio is even better than MM. Its actually amazing - almost 2g of protein per 10 calories.

But I do think that MM (the premade shakes) is a good and tasty product and it keeps me satisfied until my next meal.

If it works for you and you like it, I have no idea why there would be a problem with it. Just because some people prefer "lite" and reduced fat/calorie foods for themselves doesn't mean weight loss can't occur on regular foods too. Keep track of your calories and see how your body reacts; in the end, that's what matters for weight loss. I like Muscle Milk; I'm not as much of a fan of the lite version.

The thing about MM Lite (ready to drink shake) is that yes, it is has far fewer calories, but it is a much smaller serving than regular MM ready to drink (8.5 oz vs 11 oz). There are about 19 (18.85, actually) calories per ounce in Muscle Milk Light. There are 20 calories per ounce in Muscle Milk. So the "Lite" part is, for the most part, a result of the smaller portion.

You can lose weight eating anything - its a simple matter of calories in vs calories out. It doesn't matter if you drink MM, MM Lite, some other whey Protein, or you just eat your Protein (or if you dont, for that matter...calories can come from protein, fat or carbs...regardless of where they come from, if you eat more than you burn, you'll gain...if you eat less, you'll lose...and please, no one launch into the "I feel like I can't function if I'm eating carbs...so calories in ARE NOT just calories in to me"...you're talking about something different, you're not talking about the simple equation of calories in vs out). If you feel like you want to budget a MM into your daily calorie goal (and that goal is less than you are burning), then you will lose weight.

Also, I bought the Premier Protein shakes (160 calories, 30 g of protein) and they are delicious. I'm phasing out the MM and moving to the Premier Protein shakes. I love them

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
