So far not so good

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 11/1/10 and before that I followed all the posts about how frustrated many people get at having to wait until they get enough fills so that the band can really start to do its work. Well, here I am one day out and I can barely swallow my own spit. Every tiny sip, even of just Water, really hurts. My doctor said anatomically I have a large stomach and this makes the band tighter than usual. Hey, maybe I wasn't fat after all--I just had a big stomach. I'm told I have to be patient and that it would gradually loosen after the surgical swelling decreases. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and hopefully after I can keep some food down and the pain goes away I won't be so grumpy. Most everybody on the site is so positive so I feel badly for beig a downer on my very first post.

Try maybe ice chips or a popcicle, to help the swelling go down. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! It took me a while to start feeling human again but it will happen. YOU will do great!!! Keep on trucking!!! Everyday it gets better!

I agree, ice helps heaps when you are swollen. Also speak to your surgeon, maybe he put some fill in when he did the surgery, if he did you may need it removed as for some people the combination of fill and post surgery swelling is too much.

My doctor said anatomically I have a large stomach and this makes the band tighter than usual. Hey, maybe I wasn't fat after all--I just had a big stomach. I'm told I have to be patient and that it would gradually loosen after the surgical swelling decreases.

My doctor told me the same thing when I was banded. I didn't have a fill, but he said he had the pull the band really tight just to get it around my stomach. He even warned me that I might need to stay in the hospital for a few days. I was able to drink some, so I was sent home on schedule.

Here's the good news....The swelling went down slowly like he said it would and I wasn't hungry at all. You read on here all the time about bandster hell and people starving 3 days post-op. None of that happened to me. No bandster hell and I didn't need a fill for 3 months. Oh and one more thing...I lost weight quickly with very little effort (in the beginning!).

The swelling will go down and eating cold things (popsicles, ice cream) will help. You will be ok. Just keep sipping. It will take a while (a few weeks) for the swelling to go down completely, but you should be able to drink better in a couple of days. The worst swelling for me was during the first week.

I hope you have the same band experience I did. I think having a large stomach may be a good thing!

Cindy

NO!!!! You are not alone. I was the exact same way. I am one week out and feeling much better. I can swallow now...Yeah!!

I did not think I was going to make it...had sooooo many regrets, but I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there.

I appreciate hearing the good and the bad experiences. It prepares me for the reality that the choice I am making is not as easy out.

I hope you are feeling better really soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
