November 2010 Bandsters - post op

Recommended Posts

hi everyone, sorry i haven't posted. I went in on the 16th to be banded, and it went well. The only problem that i had was with my bladder! I had to stay in the hospital overnight because my bladder would not wake up. I finally came home yesterday just to go back to bed. I have slept most of the day! The gas pain is really bad. I have been taking the gas-x and the pain meds. I have to remind myself to drink. I am on the full liquid diet now. Just trying to figure out how they want me to drink every three hours when i have no desire to drink or eat anything?

Congrats and welcome to the other side. I was the same way. Didn't want to do anything but lay there and sleep. But if you aren't already doing it, get up and move around it will help with the gas (mine is getting better finally) I also drank warm liquids like tea and broth which finally seemed to help the gas move. the pain meds cut your appetite that's why u have no desire to drink anything. So you have to force yourself to drink a little bit at a time(an ounce here and there). My second day post op it took me over 2 hours to finish an 11 ounce Protein drink. Now its getting better. So just take it day by day and know that any little bit you do is to help nourish your body. In a few days u will be taking in more and more. Good luck!

Hi all! Well today is one week post-op!! I officially start week #2 of liquids. Has anyone tried to eat other than liquids? I actually mashed a meatball today, and ate just a tiny bit. I probably ate about a 1/2 tsp worth, then put the rest in the sauce. I feel fine, but won't have anymore until I get to the mushy phase next week. I certainly do not want to hurt my stomach and jeapordize anything. I don't know why i did it. Maybe because I have not had a solid food since before my pre-op diet! But i have to tell you, I am hungry a lot! I ate more than the 6 oz of liquified Soup I am supposed to have. Then I'll have my shake later and that is that. I am trying to be so strong, and am anxious to get my first fill in a few weeks!

I was banded 11/10 and my first appointment with my doc isn't until 11/22. I was given permission to progress to mushies yesterday! I've had scrambled eggs with cheese (No problem - ate 2!) and chicken salad with low-fat mayo, which I ate with a cracker. (Yeah, I know...) I paid dearly for the cracker, as I got "stuck". Serves me right! (Now I know that I do have some restriction though.) Today, I had 2 hard boiled eggs and discovered that one and one half fit in my new stomach! Stuck again! Lesson? Eat slow, small bites, chew throughly and when I get the first sensation that I'm getting full...stop eating - or else!

I'm 6 days post op I have to do 10 days on liquid diet until I can again. oh goodness, I'm hungry all the time now. Eggs with cheese sounds like heaven. Its killing me. My nutritionist says 3 shakes a day plus Clear Liquids. I'm starving that's only about 500-600 calories. I'm back at work and need more. **sigh** I gotta hang in there.

So jealous!! I'll just stick it out I guess! It's interesting you mention restriction. Not to sound dumb, but I don't think they restricted my stomach at all. I thought they wait for the stomach to heal and do the 1st fill about a month later. But is there any restriction??

The initial "restriction" comes from the post op swelling around the stomach. Also it depends on the size of the stomach. if you have a small stomach then the band itself will have little restriction until filled but someone with a larger stomach will feel restriction sooner. I mean the stomach here and not abdomen.

Morning all =) I was banded Nov 15th, home from the hospital next day. I am doing great and the gas pains seem to finally be on the way out. I have been making it a huge point thru my day to get outside and walk, even if it's from my front door to the end of my driveway. I am on stage 3 foods, so I have not been very hungry. Getting about 50 grams of Protein in. Adding protein power to my yogurt, and shakes. I made Tomato Soup and added 2 tbls spoons of parmasan cheese. Today I can feel the tightness around my band, but I am psyched because it's my reminder to stay the course and go go go!!!! Happy Friday all =):)

Hi all! I am 3 days post-op and doing ok. I have an on-Q pain system which is a little annoying at this point, but I stopped having any pain since yesterday (if you want to know what this is, see www.askyoursurgeon.com). I am up and about and really feeling good that I got the surgery.

I had the x-ray test with swallowing the barium, and it was really cool to see. The barium I had tasted like milk of magnesia mint flavor, so it really wasn't bad at all. I didn't realize that when I have liquid, there is no restriction at all so the liquid is flying right into the big stomach pouch and leaving my band and little pouch completely alone.

I started shakes yesterday and am grateful to not be starving on the shakes like I was pre-op. However, my doc told me that if I get to be starving on the shakes I should call her because the purpose of this is not to torture myself. I am set to be on shakes for 2 weeks, but she would progress to mushies sooner if I feel I am hungry. To those who are working and starving, I suggest calling your doc too.

My mother in law also got the surgery and her doc had her on puree 2 days post-op, so there is not likely any damage you can do. Most surgeons are just super careful. I also think they want us to take advantage of not being hungry and losing a lot of weight in the beginning to make us feel good about doing the surgery. Nothing like losing 20 or 30 lbs to give you a positive boost.

After my surgery, I was told that the doc put between 2 and 4 cc's in my band. I didn't think I had any non-surgical swelling restriction until I got stuck the other day!

Topazz and others:

I just hit my two week post-surgery milestone (yesterday). I have had no problems with food getting stuck. Here is my best wisdom on the food subject:

- a two week liquid/shake diet is boring as all get-out. I started to stray 'off the reservation' at about day 8. But I was VERY careful of how I strayed. I picked things from the next phase (mushy) diet, and had teeny quantities of them, eaten very slowly, to test out where I was. I also found that doing this, with broth or whatever, made the broth tolerable. So I would have 1 T. cottage cheese and 1 T. tuna salad along with broth. I found that it provided enough variety to keep me going ...and that was my only goal...to buy one more day on a mostly liquid diet.

- When you get to phase 3, make good choices again. Celebrate that you don't have to drink another shake, or at least not 4 or 5 a day! Enjoy the Soup, cottage cheese, mashed squash, and measure it all. I have a digital scale and I use measuring cups...I find that I'm satisfied and it helps to know what I'm consuming.

- Be honest with your nutritionist. I told her, at my 12 day visit, what I had been doing (with straying) and what I had eaten. She said, "That's fine, and you did the right thing. And you are clearly ready for the next phase, so go for it." That was a great feeling.

Having said all that, my three other comments -- and I wonder if others have found this -- are that I am REALLY bummed to not be able to take ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen sodium) any more for arthritis pain...Tylenol doesn't cut it. I also have some persisten swelling and sensitivity on the left side of my abdomen (in other words NOT the side where the band is, the other side) and wonder if others have had this. And I found that it really was just yesterday, or today, that I started to "feel like myself" -- in other words, two weeks to the minute, more or less.

Best to you all,

Deb WS

Well surgery was Wed. and I had to stay overnight as my heart rate did not want to go down. Everything went well, nursers and doctors were all great and got me back to normal fast. I got home yesturday about noon, took pain meds and slept on and off all day. Kept getting up to walk and finally this morning had gas refielf. Lucky so far no shoulder pain like others have spoke about. I do have a little burning sensation when I get up and down at the largest incision but doc said that would go away, that is my biggest pain complaint.

As much as you want to, don't sleep all day. Get up and walk, walk, walk or else you will have gas pain for a very long time. As far as drinking, keep a bottle near you and just do it. I mean it is either that or back in the hospital. That is how I made myself drink. I thought, "do I want to end up back in the hospital, hooked up to IVS because I am not drinking enough or do I want to stay home.

I also numbered my bottles of Water, I had 2 because the other liquid came from Protein shakes. What I did with that is I had to finish bottle one by noon. Protein shake am, Water between, then the next Protein Shake, etc. I also had a Protein mix that was fruit flavored I would do with my water just to boost protein when needed. Good luck!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
