November 2010 Bandsters - post op

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling panicky and depressed looking at everyone else's weight loss tickers. I've lost maybe 10 pounds after 3.5 weeks of shakes, whereas many of the rest of you have lost more than twice that! Why am I not losing weight faster? I feel like cutting down on my shakes.

Plus, I'm just so TIRED of those everloving shakes. Last night I sneaked a slice of roast beef (thin, deli cut) off my husband's leftover sandwich and God it tasted good. I think I'm anemic or something.

I just feel down and like this is yet another failure for me to control my weight again.

Rose I am going threw the exact same thing. I am seriously considering cutting out the morning shake. I am going for my first fill tomorrow and have just begun to exercise. I too have only lost 10lbs since surgery on 10-28 I have 60 to 70 lbs to lose. I am going to try very hard to not compare myself to other people. I currently weigh 223lbs or 225lbs and I am 5'5. Maybe many people with a lot more weight loss have better metabolisms or more weight to lose. I am trying to exercise even if it is for 20 minutes a day.

Let's keep our chins up. This is not a magic bullet its a tool.

I just wanted to say that you gave some great advice. You definitely can't compare yourself to others because I think starting weight has a lot to do with it. Good luck on your journey!!

Are you getting in enough Protein? My weight was at a stand still & I found out it was because I wasn't getting the proper amount of protein. Your body will hang on to the weight if it doesn't get enough protein. I was having a hard time with the Protein Shakes because they were just too filling so my Dr suggested Cytomax Protein Drink which has 40g of protein in a 20 oz bottle. I bought the tangerine flavor (but they have a bunch of flavors) & as long as it's cold I can drink it without any problems. I start off my day with a bottle of that & I don't have anything else until I finish the 20ozs. Then I try & have another one in the early afternoon. I don't finish the 2nd one but at least that way I'm getting 60g to 70g's of protein a day. Ever since I started on this the weight has been coming off. Good luck!!

I was banded on the same day and still at 6 days po cannot really take in more than 4oz of liquid in an hour. A 8oz portein shake takes me a good 2 hours to finish. I am hoping that I will be able to take in more soon, but am feeling really tired and not getting enough Protein. My PA says that this is normal and not to worry. I am a big baby and have already gone through my pain meds and am still in a bit of pain when I walk..........but am losing weight soooo.......that's the goal right?

My Dr suggested Cytomax Protein Drink (it's premade in a bottle like juice) which has 40g of protein in a 20 oz bottle. I bought the tangerine flavor (but they have a bunch of flavors). Hope this helps, good luck!

One of the HUGE things my Doctor stressed is that everyone looses differently. Some people actually need more calories to loose or their body goes into starvation mode. I am not loosing that quickly either. The large ticker move is because my ticker goes from my starting weight and includes six months of very slow pre op loss with the nutritionist.

I am new to this site but I have been following it for a while. I was banded on November 12th so I am 4 days post op and I have had some ups and downs since the surgery. One main one being the fact that I went back to work on Monday 5 hours (day 3 post op) and I really wish I hadn't because I haven't been able to rest properly since. Even though I worked at my desk, I was miserable from gas pain all day. Anyway going back to my surgery day,I arrived at the hosp at 540am for my 730a surgery. All went well and I was back in my hosp room by 1100a. The nurses gave me morphine and toradol for pain and pepcid for my stomach. They also gave me blood thinners as a shot in my arm (that burned pretty bad but I survived) I really didn't have much pain in my incisions (I have 5) except the port site. That was the one with the most pain. I stayed over night. The next morning they did an xray (I swallowed the white chalky stuff, not as bad as I thought) LOL its like mylanta without the flavor. Anyway all was ok I was given liquids for lunch broth (it was horrid, I really think it was dish water) apple juice, 2 popsicles, and tea. I was so happy to see lunch I dove in but didn't realize that I had just had surgery and that my stomach was still sore. OMG it hurt so bad to swallow (as the liquid went down my esophagus). I immediately called the nurse for pain meds. So make sure you take it sloooow when u have that first liquid meal post op. Anyway I have not had any nausea since right after surgery, which Is great I hadn't had any shoulder pain since right after surgery either, BUT it came back yesterday and has been with me since. As well as the gas pains from HELL. Nothing helps, walking, moving, gas-x, nothing. I feel like I am going to float away. It also keeps me from taking in all the liquids that I need to cuz I'm so bloated. I did take liquid tylenol and It did help slightly with the pain today. But only briefly. I'm only working half days so I sit an watch the clock. I wish I had taken a week off work but as my luck always has it, I took a vacation at the end of october and I found out DURING my vacation that my surgery date was NOV 12th. What luck. I had no idea I would be approved so fast. I was thinking it would be after the holidays. So I really couldn't take several more days off. Oh well I'm surving. I love this forum, you guys seem so warm and friendly and we all have something in common! Thanks for listening to my rant and good luck to you all. Just take it one day at a time!

Val

I agree with you 100%! I posted last night because I seriously was at my breaking point. My gas pains hurt so bad I am still miserable. But I walked alot today (MAYBE TO MUCH) but I have to really put a consious effort at getting this gas out of my chest and shoulder. I wish you luck while we are both dealing with this. Just know there is light at the end of the tunnel. And Lord, am I ready for the light to shine.! So lets hang in there. OKay?

I just want to thank you guys so much for the advice. I was really in a bad way last night. After being on this site I was still up until 3:30am in serious pain. I took some of your advise and broke down and called the doctor. He thinks I might have a gas bubble under my rib cage which is why I am getting so much pain. He gave me an appointment for wednesday (tommorrow). I will keep you guys posted. I am still excited about this surgery and what I have gone through. I guess I'm just hurting and I really was venting. I'm definitely ready to get to my happy place with this new band. But, it makes me realize through this site I am not alone! And that in its self has been a huge help. Thank you everyone.

I really hope you feel better soon. I never knew that gas could be so painful. I never had a problem with it before LOL. Now its all I think about every minute of the day. I'm sure as soon as we get thru thus hurdle we can focus on the big picture, the reason we did this in the first place. Were all in it together :) But now, back to thinking about gas :(

Good luck, brownsugar!

And thanks, guys. I think I also had PMS yesterday so was extra crabby. Sigh. I weigh 330 pounds. OW IT HURT TO TYPE THAT. I'm six feet tall and muscular (and female, obviously). I'd like to weigh about 190. Well, really, I used to look very hot at 160 when I was 20 years old, but I'm not sure I have a hope in hell of getting back there! I'll settle for under 200. (Funny, I can remember being in college and a friend of mine said she was over 200 pounds and I thought "How can anyone let themselves go like that?" Ha ha ha, 20-year-old-me. Ha.)

My paperwork doesn't have any restriction on how soon I can shower. It just says - showers only. Did anyone else shower soon afterwards?

I had to wait 24 hours before I was allowed to Shower, and I was also told Showers only until the strips come off.

Hello everyone. I was banded on November 16 in Austin, Texas. I am blessed to report that I am feeling great. I had one bout with gas yesterday, but my husband rubbed it out of my back. I am keeping my legs elevated when sitting and/or sleeping. This has helped a great deal with the gas pains.

I have taken plenty of Water in and some broth, a few popcicles and a small amount of Jello. Protein Shakes don't start for me until next week.

I want to thank you all for your posts. They helped me to better prepare for my post-op experience. Thank you all so much.

Dawnya

Hi All,

I am pleased to be joining you all on this side of the site, "post-op"! Had my surgery yesterday. Went in at 6:00 am, in the operating room at 7:00 am, awake at 8:20 am, out the door at 11:30 am! Rather quick and much less painful than I anticipated. Now, second day, has been quite good. I have been taking my pain meds, doing LOTS of walking, and using a heating pad on my shoulder when I get that stabbing gas pain. It seems to help a lot.

Hoping everyone else who is already banded this month is doing well and wishing all the best to all of those still waiting for the surgery. It can go smoothly too. I guess I have been real lucky so far. But I know to take it one day at a time!

Cindy

I was wheeled into the or at 8:45 this morning. I believe I was in recovery about 10am. But didn't know it. I was very nauseous and throwing up. Also in a lot of pain. I had to wait for the Meds to stop the nauseous before they could give me pain Meds. It took 7 shots of morphine to bring the pain down to a 5 out of 10 finally get the pain under control and I was able the start drinking Water. No problem got dressed walked for a few and left at 1 pm. now I'm resting at home drinking 4 tbsp of Isopure an hour. I'm soar at the port site and that's it. no gas pains right now. hope it stays that way.

I know there was a couple of people being banded today how u doing today?

I will update signature later but I was 187.6 this morning. that means I'm down 15 pounds in two weeks on liquid diet pre op. no comments here

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
