Anyone willing to tell me a little about their experience being banded and pregnant?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I would love to talk to a few people (either via email, phone or in person) who are banded and who are pregnant or have been pregnant while banded. Please reply to this thread or send me a private message if you wouldn't mind talking with me about your experience.

I'm curious specifically about:

* The ease of getting pregant while banded

* The ability to get enough nutrition for the baby while banded

* Labor with the band. Is it more difficult? Can you have a normal C section delivery when you're banded?

* How the port reacts when pregnant. Does the port cause problems as your stomach grows larger when you're pregnant?

I'm looking into having the surgery and would like to have children sometime in the future so I'm gathering information now.

Thanks so much!

* The ease of getting pregant while banded

I got pregnant the first cycle we tried

* The ability to get enough nutrition for the baby while banded

I had to get half the liquid take out of my band at 15 weeks. I was having trouble keeping food down

* Labor with the band. Is it more difficult? Can you have a normal C section delivery when you're banded?

This will be my third c/s, but first band baby. My c/s is scheduled like normal. Both my OB and band dr see no issues about having a c/s.

My belly is pretty big now and I have had no issues with my port. You can easily feel it since everything is getting smashed in there.

Best of luck to you!

I have been banded for 7 years. I have 2 children and a third on the way, with my first it took 6 months to get pregnant but then I miscarried, I got pregnant again 3 months later, I had pretty bad morning sickness and had it all taken out which was a mistake. I gained 75 lbs with that pregnancy. I had a normal vaginal delivery no problems, i also breastfeed for the first year and had no problems with my band or port, I lost all my weight after about a year i got pregnant again on my first cycle we tried, that time I had them take half out and I gained about 50 lb. with that pregnancy but I had some put back when my dr said I was gaining to much, my delivery went just fine again and no band problems I lost the weight quicker and still had enough food intake to breastfeed her also, this time I'm 6 weeks pregnant and have had back pain nausea and throwing up however I just had some taken out and my back pain is gone and I'm not nearly as nauseous I'm hoping to only gain about 30 lbs this time. Hope this helped

Hi, This is my first post. I was banded 11-06 and got pregnant with my 5th son in Sept 2007. No problems getting pregnant always do when I lose weight. I didn't have any problems with the band while pregnant but did have my whole fill taken out at 6 weeks. Gained 30lbs with my pregnancy not bad for me. I had my 4th c-section with him wasn't any different then when I didn't have the band. Good luck more then likely you won't have any problems. Although after the baby get back to your dr as soon as you can and get a fill I gained 20lbs after he was born and I shouldn't have. Jenny

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
