Stress and the Band

Recommended Posts

Hi, I got banded a few years ago and did great for the first few months then I had some stress in my life and I needed to get the Fluid removed from the band because I couldn't even drink Water.

I still am not back to normal with handling stress and the band. Does anyone have any suggestions and how to get back on track? I have gained back now more that I want to and need to get it under control. :wink2:

I currently have nothing in my band but still have trouble eating most normal foods. (funny how sweets and chips go down fine but Veggies and fruit not so much). Should I got back to a liquid diet?

Thanks!

You need to find a way to reduce the stress in your life. If your life is just going to be stressful . . .get some counseling to learn some coping skills to deal with all the stress you are dealing with.

Are you chewing really really well and eating slowly?

Not to be overly blunt, but sweets and chips don't go down easily if you choose not to eat them.

Your band is empty, so eating healthy foods should not be obstructed, unless you have some persistent swelling.

Yes, return to liquids, then advance slowly through mushy and soft foods, as tolerated. Choose good-quality foods, and eat them in appropriate portions.

As you move through the stages to solids, be really careful to take small bites, and chew well (so that you don't swallow anything larger than a pencil eraser).

Once you're handling solids well, you can assess the need for a fill.

Stress does make my band tighter; during those times, I gravitate toward foods that are "easier" on the band. Pushing it leads to swelling, which compounds the problem. Babying the band does the trick.

But what does the trick more is adopting good coping techniques. For me, exercise is a huge part of the solution.

I agree with Cheri, find some external way to reduce the stress in your life.

Do you exercise? I find that working out is a great stress reliever. Yoga is really good, but even just taking a walk helps. Go buy one of those kiddie inflatable punching bags and take out your frustrations on it!

Try sipping something warm before you try to eat. I like Tazo's "Calm" tea, but any brand should do the job. Try Decaf tea if possible. The warmth of the tea should loosen the band just a tad and help with letting solid food go down.

Along with the small bites and chewing well that Cheri suggested, make sure your Protein is tender and moist. You may need to "overcook" your veggies while you are stressed. Don't be afraid to use a small amount of "lube" such as low carb ketchup, light mayo, salsa, etc. to ease the food down.

I apologize if you're already doing all these things. I don't mean to be "preaching to the choir". Hope you feel better soon.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
