What do you do when you get stuck?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 10/11 and sometimes it feels like there is food in my throat, not down near the band like everyone says. Does that mean I am eating too much? I haven't had a fill yet, it doesn't make me feel like I have to throw up but it's really uncomfortable. What am I doing wrong?

Did you do a week of liquids aqnd then soft foods? It could be swelling. Just take it sloooowwww an chew really well. It does feel a little different to eat from now on but you'll figure it out!! Hang in there!

I was banded Oct 6th and I haven't had anything get stuck yet. I dread that day. But I still chew until food is mushy or mash up my food really well before I eat.

I didn't have that stuck feeling until my first fill. It is always caused by me eating too fast or not chewing enough.

I had one stuck episode and it was my first and ONLY..lol...If you get stuck and are at home or someones house lay on your left side. I dont know the science behind it but it helps food move through. I have also heard about doing the left armed chicken dance. If you are somewhere where you can't lay down stick your left hand bent up under your left shoulder and flap like a chicken. It does almost the same thing as the laying down.... But in all honesty try try very hard not to get stuck because IT HURTS... and it isnt good for your pouch/band. But in those rare cases when it accidentaly happens lay down on the left side if you can..

I felt the same way as you post surgery. It would feel lodged in my throat. Your either taking too big of a bite, not chewing enough, or eating too much. Depends on where you are in eating to know which you're doing. If it was just your first bite or two, then too big a bite, or something that your band doesn't agree with. Ex, I'd feel that way with bread (still do most of the time).

Even now when I do one of the above things, I feel it get lodged up high, not 'low' as some describe. I'll push my food away and allow time for the object to go down. If it's stuck then I do the 'chicken dance' and it really does help me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
