Not drinking while eating

Recommended Posts

Is it just me, but I'm finding it hard to adjust to not being able to have something to drink while eating? Prior to being banded, I always had either Water or ice tea (sugar-free) with my dinner and a cup of coffee with Breakfast. Anyone else having the same issue?

ME TOO!!! I am having trouble with this. Especially not having some Water right after I eat to wash away the food taste. Are you really supposed to wait 1 hour after eating to drink something? Why!?

once you reach restriction you physically won't be able to eat and drink at the same time....it is really uncomfortable. I found early on by not setting a cup @ your place @ the table helped with the weird mental thing about eating and drinking

I also battle with this but I find it's worse if I haven't had a lot of liquids between my meals. I try to get through 1 1/2 litres a day. I have a tiny sip of Water with a meal if I feel particularly thirsty but the thought of clearing my pouch of food too quickly and then being hungry in an hour keeps me disciplined! I have a dry mouth just writing this which means I need some more water. You're not alone!

I finally found out the answer to this on the internet.... if you drink liquid straight after eating, your meal is literally washing out the food that's just arrived in your pouch into the larger stomach = hungry quickly! Drinking just before a meal fills the pouch and then you can't get your full serve in as your pouch is already half full or even three quarters full. :smile2: This is quite tough as you have to remember to drink before hand and then STOP in time and stay dry for at least 1 hour afterwards. I'm not good with time awareness!!!

If you are drinking near or with meals you are not using your band. You are sliding food through..its an important habit to get into for the long haul. Whoever said to get the taste of the meal out of my mouth should try brushing their teeth...it really helps you stop eating and not want to eat for a while...good luck!

This is pretty tough for me to do. I never drink while I eat, but I find that I do not get enough liquid in on a daily basis because of it. I need to try to get in more water...

I'm struggling with it as we speak lol.

I try to avoid salty foods so I don't get thirsty while eating and I drink a lot a bit before I eat - I also find that makes me less hungry.

Yeah, I'm great about not drinking with meals (well, I'm tight now so I cant) but I need to drink more the rest of the time! I just HAVE to have a water bottle near me or I never think of it...the thing is, I NEVER get thirsty! Weird!!

I was banded just over a year ago and struggled with this initially. Funny thing is, my body seems to have trained itself! About 30-45 minutes after eating I become thirsty and have a strong desire to drink...it's like clockwork!! I am vcery tight right now (had to have .2cc removed) so am pretty sure I'm not getting enough Water so try to push it between meals. Hang in ther, it all comes together!

When I was going through my 3 month "education" They had me ween myself off. This way it was not such a struggle once banded. Try doing that if you drink 8 oz cut it down to 6 then 4 and so on. I too was told and follow the 30 min before and after meals. Also in order to ensure that I get in the fluids necessary I try to drink at least 20 oz between meals/snacks and that has worked for me. If you are not eat or waiting between the time of what the doc has told you, then you should be drinking fluids.

Hope this advice helps.

I have been struggling with this as well. It's very difficult not to eat and drink at the same time, and very hard to re-learn habits. I'm 52 yrs old and it's tough! Now, I'm finding that if I drink before my meal, then NOT during, I'm okay. If I do take a sip - it's almost like it plugs me up. I can't eat and drink at the same time anymore.

6 months post op, and I'm still learning!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
