Not drinking while eating

Recommended Posts

I found out the hard way this evening. I was eating and I felt the food getting stuck. I thought it would be a good idea to sip something to get it to go down. Instead, everything that I sipped came back up! Lesson Learned!!

I have been struggling with this as well. It's very difficult not to eat and drink at the same time, and very hard to re-learn habits. I'm 52 yrs old and it's tough! Now, I'm finding that if I drink before my meal, then NOT during, I'm okay. If I do take a sip - it's almost like it plugs me up. I can't eat and drink at the same time anymore.

6 months post op, and I'm still learning!

Hi there - I'm also in my 50s and trying to unlearn habits too. Had my first 4mls fill a week ago and I'm noticing very little difference. I never feel "tight" and can drink and eat at the same time without any noticable effect - I don't make a habit of this but tried it too see. Nothing. It seems I'll need another fill if I compare notes with you. Thanks for the information.

I try not to drink anything for 30 minutes after eating, but will take a little swish of liquid to rinse if I need to. The PA lady who does my fills, told me during my first fill that it was okay to drink while eating. I'm not totally listening to her.... I have to remember though, if I do drink during eating, to not eat any more than what I measure out. I do always make sure to not eat for a minimum of 4 1/2 to 5 hrs after I eat. Good luck to you.

Yes, that's one of the things i really struggle with! Every since you begin to eat solid foods as a child your always given a drink to. It's a tricky habit to break.

Is it just me, but I'm finding it hard to adjust to not being able to have something to drink while eating? Prior to being banded, I always had either Water or ice tea (sugar-free) with my dinner and a cup of coffee with Breakfast. Anyone else having the same issue?

SusieQ11o4-i did the exact same thing thought a drink would help! WRONG! lol just like you lesson learnt!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
