Post Op Clear Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

So my doc has me on Clear Liquids, 2oz every 2 hrs for seven days. Was anyone else given similar instructions? I am starting to feel weak either from lack of calories or Vitamins or both. Any input is appreciated.

I was banded on October 15th. I was on clear liquids the first week and full liquids the second week. One key thing is to be sure you get your 60-70 grams of Protein. That will keep you from getting hungry. I use the Protein powders from unjury.com. It's medical grade, comes in 6 flavors and the unflavored disolves like magic with NO aftertaste! I put it in a glass of crystal lite lemonade. It will make it a little cloudy but the taste is not changed. I put it in chicken broth as well. They have a great website and have bariatric Vitamins without lots of herbs and things in them. Be sure you are getting your Vitamins and your Calcium. That will also help with the shakiness. Drink lots of Water and fluids. I also had Jello (the the Protein powder added) and held it in my mouth until it disolved. I jazzed up the beef and chicken broth with some spices and that was great for the taste.

I went today for my two week post op appointment and everything was great. I have great energy ( I actually painted my bedroom the Sunday after my Friday surgery) and I feel great! I had no pain and only took two doses of children's tylenol after surgery. My incisions have healed and my surgeon told me now the fun part begins!

Today I'm moving up to mushy foods and it feels strange to chew.

Hang in there and be patient. Everything will come together. My daughter has an appointment to get her final consult tomorrow and pick her band date!

I'm so excited for all of us!

Hugs,

Pam

Thanks Pam, I knew that's what I was missing, but my doc said no Protein or Vitamins until I see him in seven days. I know if I just had that it wld be sooo much easier. Guess every doc is different. I'm thinking maybe Vitamin Water or gatorade can help me with the energy part.

OMG thank you so much for posting that! I had my surgery exactly one week ago today. For the past week I have felt so tired and weak because I couldnt stomach the Protein Water that I have. I was told by my dr to drink 2 oz of protein water and 2 oz of h2o every hour. I know I have not been getting my nutrients and I have not even been remotely close to hitting 65g of protein a day. Today I can start soft foods so I tried to make some egg beaters and added unflavored whey to them and they were disgusting, i took one bite and threw them away. I am really starting to worry.

Do you recommend the unflavored powder or all of them?

I bought the unflavored, the chocolate splendor and the vanilla. when on full liquids I mix one scoop of the vanilla (20 grams) with a carnation instant Breakfast, and about a cup and 1/2 of 2% milk. I'm learning to drink something other than whole milk and started with 2%. I'll move to 1% the next time I go to the grocery store. I fill the rest of the glass with ice and that's Breakfast. It also has 35 grams of Protein which is half of what I need for the day.

I also mix the vanilla and chocolate in sugar free Jello pudding which makes 4 servings. That's 5 grams per serving and a great dessert.

I use the unflavored in Soups or crystal lite lemonade or tea.

It's a process and they have some good recipes on the site. I found this Protein site when my Mom was going through chemo. It's medical grade and in my opinion the best. I love the Vitamins and Calcium they sell as well. They are chewable and don't have lots of strange herbs or stuff in them.

Hope this helps!

Hum. That seems a bit extreme to me. I was on a two week liquid diet, but no way way it just clear liquids the first week. I trust my doctor implicitly as he has done close to 2000 band surgeries, so I think he knows what he is talking about. I was able to have Soups, Protein shakes, milk, etc. You need calories and Protein. I am not suggesting to shun all the instructions given to you, but I think it's way off base. I was drinking Protein Shakes hours after surgery and I'm still alive.

I was banded this past Monday 10/25 and I am also having a hard time getting in all the Protein as I have been instructed to just use clear liquids too. Today was the first day I was able to get in 65 grams but I have felt stuffed all day and I tried to space it out over the course of the day. I don't go back unti 11/03 and and not sure I can stomach the Isopure until then. The Super whey Protein Shots are a little better, only because they are more concentrated and you get 25 grams in 2.5 ozs.

I was banded on the 15th, and my post op diet is clear liquids for the first week, then on the liquids for the next 2 weeks but only 1 protien shake a day.

I too was on clear liquids for 1 week. That included borth, Jello, italian ice, popsicles, and Water or crystal light. I was able to take my Vitamins and Calcium. You are going to be hungry during this time. You will get through it though and move to the next stage and cottage cheese will be like heaven. I was not allowed Protein until stage 2.

My doc said no Protein or Vitamins until I saw him on the 7th day. The hunger is one thing, I know I can make it thru that. What I can't make it thru is this weak feeling, the dizziness and the feeling that I'm going to pass out. I want vitamins BAD!

Here's a link to my doctor's post-op diet. Much easier than 7 days Clear liquids. They've done over 700 bands now.

Best wishes to you. I love my band!

I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks but took Vitamins daily, had a Meal Replacement split over 2 serves every day, (Ensure 1/2 cup), clear broth and loads of sugar free jelly/jello and of course a lot of liquid in the form of a diluted fruit juice. Physically, I also took it very easy and had plenty of rest and quietness for 2 weeks. Didn't lift heavy things nor did I do much beyond slow walks at the local mall. I was very tired after my surgery which took 1 hour and 8 minutes and I know this knocks your system so important to take great care of yourself. Hope this helps. Bunny

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
