Has anyone had ice cream yet? It sounds so good. I can resist, but wonder if anyone has eaten any yet? I know it's one of the 'sliders', so I won't even try it.

I am 4 weeks out and yes I have. I either have Skinny Cow or Weight Watchers, but only as a treat.

Not sure if you mean recently after surgery or just at all, but I eat ice cream. For awhile I was eating a lot, and fell off the wagon. Now I eat a Weight Watchers ice cream if I have the calories to spare (usually I try to save some calories for it). If I want regular ice cream, I go to whole foods and get a small gelato. Gelato has far fewer calories and fat than ice cream, and if I get a 2 oz portion, I know I can't go overboard.

Shameless plug: I started a Thanksgiving challenge if you want to join it: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Am5-D5xrt3dKdDJMUVVabzBnMG1qY3JBeWxScGItM0E&hl=en&authkey=CMjw7tUJ

Challenges keep me motivated and accountable, so I'm trying to join one for each holiday. Join up!

Nope.

I'm staying off refined sugar - I was showing signs of addiction towards it...That and junk food...a little scary, so I'm avoiding it.

It sounds like it would be nice to have after a workout though.

I'd say ice cream is probably one of the worst thing someone with a lap band could eat.

A ton of calories, and provides no feeling of fullness.

No thanks. I'm avoiding that stuff like the plague.

I'm 9 months out, and I still haven't reached the point where I'm comfortable incorporating ice cream. We all have different approaches (and needs), but for me it's a slippery slope. I really do find myself physically satisfied with the foods my body requires, so I'm steering clear of the foods that just don't do anything for me, health-wise, during the weight loss phase.

Ice cream has never done me any favors. And it's one of those foods for which the band offers no constraint whatsoever.

Honestly, if you say you can resist it, keep it up. Ice cream is so tasty and satisfying to our brains for those few seconds, but doesn nothing for our asses!! Don't do it. It's just not worth the wasted calories and sugar. If you have to, take one bite, just one and move on. Don't buy it and bring it home to the freezer. Do it out with someone. Just one bite!!!

For me, that kind of extreme thinking (ie Ill NEVER eat ice cream again because its not a band approved food) has gotten me into trouble (both pre-band and post-band). This is a lifestyle change, not a crash diet. So if I want to have some low fat ice cream or gelato or whatever, if I have calories left to spend, I'm not depriving myself. And I almost never go over my calorie goal (I went over one day by 20 calories in the past 2.5 months). For me, this isn't a diet, its a whole new life. The great thing is, whereas before I would eat an entire tub of Ben and Jerrys, now I can have one Weight Watchers ice cream bar, and be okay with that.

This is a lifestyle change

Yep. And my lifestyle change doesn't include ice cream.

It's not extreme thinking, for me. It's what I need to do to be successful.

Your mileage may vary.

Well good luck with that! Different strokes for different folks.

Not sure what the mileage comment meant, but I lost 6 pounds this past week (which included my weight watchers ice cream bars!). I lost about 80 pounds initially with my band within the first 5 months (with NO ice cream or anything that was sweet) and then gained 50 back because I went crazy with the food that I was denying myself. Pretty excited to be on a new, balanced track (I've lost over 35 of those 50 pounds in the past 8 weeks with a balanced and healthy diet and lots of exercise, and food logs). That's what works for me!

My son would have a cup or bowl or whatever of ice cream this past summer. I'd get a spoon and have one spoonful and that was enough to satisfy my desire .. all I really needed was a taste.

Then I'd go into another room where I couldn't see him eat it and get busy doing something else.

This strategy might not work for everyone.. works for me.

I have had regular ice cream, but only a VERY small amount. But what is really great where I live there is a local store that makes fat free, sugar free vanilla ice cream and it is to die for, it is such a great guilt-free treat!!!

That is true. It is a lifestyle change but I know that ice cream is one of my trigger foods. From experience, one bite leads to two leads to eating a half gallon every day for a week. That carb overload leads to craving potatoes, bread, sweets, etc. and it doesn't matter whether it's healthy choice, WW or some other type of 'good for you' ice cream. Excess is still excess.

If you can control it, more power to you. For someone like me, my 'lifestyle change' means I have to avoid it permanently and remind myself that ice cream is poison to me. One bite takes me on that downward spiral that leads to out of control blood sugars even on insulin and massive overeating.

I eat ice cream - yes, it's wasted calories....but this is the rest of your life....I say enjoy it. I'm 6 months post op and down about 75 lbs. I do exercise daily - weight training and cardio - so I allow myself a little treat now and then. And when I do, I cut down on other foods for the day.

Good luck to you!!

I think a slider is different for everyone really. Some call cottage cheese a slider and I eat 1/4 cup and i'm DONE.

Don't cheat yourself. Try a little bit? Just portion it out and walk away

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
