Hi guys,

I'm new to this site. I am convinced that the LAP-BAND® is the way to go ...but my mom is making me feel afraid of having the surgery done. I'm 24 years old, 5.3" and weigh 225 Pounds. She says it is not necessary and that after 3 C-sections and an appendectomy it might be more harmful than i think. She doesn't want to even hear me talk about it. :mad2:I'm so upset because her opinion is really important to me. HELP!!! What can i do to make her understand that this is a good idea? .Also i would like to know how long would it take from the 1st Appt. to the surgery day... and if any of you had to care for small children after surgery? (I have a 9,3, and 1 year old).. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry she's so unsupportive, sweetie. I just scheduled my surgery 2 weeks ago (December 23rd!) and one of my best friends is very non-supportive of my choice. (Think along the lines of, "I should be able to do it by myself" "If I just got off my butt and did it I'd feel alot better" etc.) It's not an easy thing. I actually got lucky in that my mom had the lapband in 2007, so she's there for me, when I need to rant and rave about how excited I am, or on the other end of the spectrum "IS IT GONNA HURT?!" lol I think that you have to do what's right for you, no matter what your mother thinks, but if you want her to understand, maybe approach her in a way that she'll get. If she's very literal, show her the risks and benefits, and how much the benefits outweigh the SMALL risk!

I'm only 23 and I'm 5'6" and 270 lbs. I'm also a mom to young kids (twin 3-year-olds) and at first I was worried about how I would take care of my kids post-surgery, but I know everything will fall into place. My parents are going to help me with them, because they'll already be off work around the time I get mine for Christmas break.

As for how long you will have to wait, it depends on the insurance. My doctor is requiring me to get a psych consult, a physical (getting blood tests, etc done as well), and he wants me to get a sleep study done to make sure I don't have sleep apnea. I'm self-paying, although I have insurance, they want me to go on a diet for 6 months, but since I'd still have to meet my deductible beforehand, it would only save me about $400. Kind of crappy, if you ask me. Usually you only have to wait about a month or two if you're really dedicated!

Like I said before, you have to make sure it's right for you! Have you already had your initial consult?

It really comes down to you doing what is right for you. The rest will work itself out, ie your mother will come around when she sees you healthier and happier. A doctor can answer any questions you have about having the surgery after your previous surgeries. I

t is a big decision, but it's yours to make! Good luck.

I would say to get all the information about the lapband and let your mother read the information. Go online talk with doctors, send off for all the information that you can get to help your mother see and lean about the information. I will say it took a year for me to get from point a- to lapbanding due to the visit getting all the information about the surgery. your mind has to be into this it is a life change.... i did a lot of research as you should do...:sneaky:

Hi! I had my first appointment at the end of September and my surgery was done on October 19th. I have 5 children ages 14,12,10,4, and 2. You'll do great!! Your mom will come around, sometimes we just have to think about our own health and not the opinions of others. She would feel better if she knew more about the procedure.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
