Brand spankin' new to all of this

Hi all,

After almost 10 years at my job, in the worst economy of my lifetime, I quit a couple of months ago to stay home and spend more time with my family. That was a big risk for me but it is working out fantastic. One night not long ago I realized that I could actually have WLS without having to worry about taking time off work.

Enter risk #2.

I went to an introductory seminar yesterday and I am convinced that lap-band is the right solution for me. Now to convince the insurance company. My BMI is around 37 and I don't have any of the big 4 co-morbids. I sure could use a lot of advice, support ... whatever to keep me focused and help me finally succeed!

Hugs!!

I don't think that your insurance will pay with your bmi & no co-morbidities. Do something for yourself... self pay & get it done. The price for self pay is more affordable these days!

@Icequeen,

I never even considered self pay, although I think it's probably out of reach for me at this time. I saw somewhere else on the forum to ask my insurance company for specific requirements. I did just that and will see where it goes from there. I'm hoping that there is some flexibility/creative qualification, but I will have to accept whatever decision I get. I am NOT willing to go to Mexico or Costa Rica for surgery. Any clue what self pay goes for?

Thanks!

@Icequeen,

Was that in the U.S.? If yes, what state? I'm in Southern California. I'm pretty sure that is going to drive up the price.

I live in Florida. Dr. Ortiz in Mexico is an option for you. He is one of the more experienced lapband surgeons,has had a good track record from what I read. More experience than US doctors.

I contacted my insurance company and was able to view their specific requirements. That, plus a conversation with my program assistant, left me feeling pretty encouraged. I go for my H&P tomorrow morning. Perhaps I'll wear some Mr.T bling and perhaps a little cement in my shoes to put me at the 40 BMI mark. (JK)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
