Traveling/Vacation 2 weeks after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anybody can give me any feedback on this based on their experience but I figured I would ask.

I'm getting banded on Nov. 4th of next week. On Nov. 21st I'll be leaving for two weeks of hunting in Canada and Kansas. It will be virtually impossible for me to have mushy or pureed foods for those two weeks and I'm really freaked out I will not be able to hold solid foods down. My doctor doesn't seem concerned about it but I remain leery.

I feel confident that I will be able to control my food intake while on this trip as I will be pretty well occupied and active with the hunts. My concern is with eating solid foods before the requisite three weeks of liquids and mushy's.

Were any of you able to move to solid foods sixteen or seventeen days after your surgery? Any complications or problems?

Thanks in advance for any advice/feedback.

I think your going to have a very hard time. You will still be healing from surgery (which takes about 6 weeks) and your energy level will be very poor from the lack of calories.

From weeks 2 to 3 I went back to work and I was exhausted.

My advice would be to cancel the trip.

Wowza - you're going for 2 weeks of hunting 2 weeks after surgery? I think 2 weeks after surgery I went to work but it was a concert (2 days of rehearsal and one performance - I'm a violinist), I was sitting most of the time, and my fiance drove me to and from everything. I can't even imagine hiking and hunting (not that I'd be hunting at any time in my life, surgery or no surgery, anyways) 2 weeks out from surgery. I think at 2 weeks my doctor was still recommending just walking on the treadmill and no strenuous activity or heavy lifting. If it were me, taking into consideration the physical strain and the food issues, I would cancel/postpone this trip, for your own health.

Thank you all for the reply's. I should clarify that there will not be any real strenuous activity involved in these trips. It basically consists of sitting in hunting blinds for several hours a day.

Jack, after reading your reply I think I might be able to come up with a plan of bringing my own soft/liquid foods for the trip. Another option would be to have my girlfriend send some pre-prepared puree's/mushy's to my destinations ahead of my arrival.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
