Hi there,

I'm 2 1/2 weeks after surgery and doing well. Unfortunately, during all my research, I somehow missed the fact that I may never be able to take a non-steriod anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication again?!? This is not good. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and NSAIDs are all that works for me. Tylenol doesn't do crap.

I understand that even without surgery NSAIDs are bad for the stomach - though I always took Protonix as well and have never had any stomach problems in the past. So, now I have the band and I just wonder what my options are. I know there is a Flexor patch out there, but that is a NSAID patch that is supposed to target specific pain...my RA gets bad enough that I'd end up patched all up...LOL. Anyway, the Flexor warnings indicated that they could cause stomach upset too (how is that possible if its not going through the stomach?).

Anyway, wondering if anybody else has had challenges with NSAIDs after surgery...

So far, so good, I'm waiting to talk to my surgeon more about this, but just looking for opinions for now. Thanks all!!!

I asked my doctor and he said I could take NSAIDS. One thing to keep in mind is that there have been recent studies that show a strong corrilation between strokes and NSAIDS. I had a mini stroke last year after being on a perscription NSAID for a year. I would research this and have a candid conversation with you doctor before continueing on NSAID therapy.

I also take pain meds for my degenerative arthritis. I've been assured that there is no problem taking my prescription with the band.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
