I'm nervous about my first fill

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I was banded on 10/06 - now I'm scheduled for my first fill on 11/11. I'm nervous because I feel so much "tightness" now. For example, it's 3:24pm and I'm still feeling tightness when I'm trying to swallow yogurt. I understand feeling this way in the morning, but still now at this time of the afternoon? I guess my biggest concern is that I won't be able to swallow anything after the fill! I really just can't imagine how it will feel being tighter than I already am. I have no problems at all with liquids, but even the softest foods are problematic. I suppose I could still be swollen from the surgery. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your advice!

My doctors office asks these questions: Can you eat 4 oz of solid food at a sitting?; Are still full 5 hours after eating?; are you losing 1-2 pounds per week?. If you are having trouble getting your Protein down I would guess they will not give you a fill. You may want to call and speak with on of the nurses. If you can't get 4 oz down easily before your first fill my guess is that they won't give you one. I would'nt see a reason to go in for an appointment if they are'n going to give you a fill. That is of course as long if you have been back in since the surgery so they can look at your incisions. Could your doctor have given you a fill at surgery?

If you've had a fill at surgery, maybe ask him to take some out :-)

If not, maybe ask him to not put any in. Just talk to him, it should be fine.

It doesn't sound like you need a fill. If anything, seems like you are too tight. At this point you should be able to eat about 4oz of solid food. I would call your doc. and let them know what's going on. I wouldn't wait for your next appointment. Good luck and congrats on your surgery.

You sound similar to me. I could eat very little during the weeks following surgery. I had my 1st fill appt 6 wks after surgery, and went in for a check-up and the NUT said I didn't need a fill since I had lost 10 lbs in the previous month, and couldn't eat too much. The feeling did wear off, and I had my 1st fill 2 wks later, at about 8 weeks post-op.

They won't give you a fill if you don't need one. Even today they had debated about my fill since I had lost 6 lbs in the last 3 wks, but I told him I was hungry and just being very watchful as to how much I ate. I did get a small fill today. So be upfront as to how you feel, and they probably won't give you a fill. At the same time, that's 2 wks from now, and 2 wks makes a big difference, and you may start being more hungry.

I went for my first fill this morning. I was banded about 8 weeks ago. I was more nervous for my fill than I was for my surgery. My doctor put 6 cc's in my 10 cc band. I was surprised that he put in so much considering it was my first fill. I was instructed to go back to a liquid diet for one day, but my stomach was growling so much that I ate a banana. It went down just fine.

I'm surprised that your doctor has already scheduled a fill. My doctor wouldn't even discuss it with me until he asked me specific questions like the ones above.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
