Hi all,

I am now a week away from surgery date. I wanted to know from post op folks... when were you able to begin exercise. The surgeon told me that i can begin walking the day after surgery, but when can you begin jogging or doing weights/machines at the gym?

Thanks,

- J

I was able to do slow walking a week after and aqua aerobics 2 weeks after. Aqua aerobics was a little more important to me though so I was walking very slowly and only doing 20 minutes a day before then. Now I'm doing an hour a day, but that's because I'm not having some of the problems I was having earlier. Aqua aerobics strengthened my back and leg muscles, so it was better to start walking.

My weight loss is mostly about keeping my spine strong, so that's why I exercise a fair bit and do it everyday - Not sure if that's what other people do, but that's what I'm doing currently.

Once I get a little better I'll be able to do harder workouts.

I was cleared to walk rigt away....more intense aerobic activity @ 4 weeks....weight lifting @ 6 weeks. I found that even three months post op I was struggling with doing some exercises like walking lunges because it was uncomfortable on my port. now everything is fine! I workout close to 2 hours a day 5 days a week...the other two days I do a 45 min yoga video to keep me limber :blushing: good luck on your band journey!

I was on a liquid only diet for 2 weeks post surgery and I told them if they aren't going to feed me, I'm not going to exercise. :blushing: I started exercising after that - when I went on the mushies.

I did short walks the first couple days after surgery. Day four I started back at the gym on the treadmill slowly working up time and speed (started at 30 minutes), kept the incline flat. I normally do the elliptical but was'nt sure how the motion would be after abdominal surgery. I did an hour a day until I could go back to swimming on day 15. I do an hour of lap swimming dailey (moderate) continuous no stopping.

thanks jsbatra. I'm still losing about 2-3 lbs a week. I had surgery in may and am down 60 lbs....have another 40 till goal. working out has been the key to my weight loss! find things that you like to do....and then just do it! I know not everyone has time to workout two hours a day but I'm lucky that my work schedule is flexible and my hubby is so supportive and encouraging. I find that I am losing inches at a faster pace than the lbs....i was this weight when I got married but in size 18-20 pants....i am now in a 14 almost 12....so that's why I love exercising :blushing:

I was instructed to walk immediately. I walked approx 20-30 minutes a day initially (just around the yard) and wasn't cleared for additional activity (not even sex) until 6 weeks after surgery.

The walking is VERY important as it aids in relieving the horrible gas pains. By week 2, I was walking an hour a day; I continued to walk and increase my time and pace as the weeks went by.

Talk w/ you doc. Seems that everyone is given different orders.

I was cleared to exercise without restriction after my 4-week check. Until your doctor specifically tells you, stick with walking.

I started back at the gym 2 weeks post op- It's going fairly well. I am doing the elliptical trainer, Nautilis and swimming. I hope to start spinning soon. Of course, I'm only three weeks post op- so still have a long way to go:bored:.:blushing:

Wow, I'm so surprised you guys were able to start walking immediatly...I remember fainting in the shower (luckily it wasn't that bad, sort I fell on my knees and not through the glass, thankgod) just from overdoing it from washing my hair! lol.

three hours afte surgery they had me up walking laps at the hospital....two laps all the way around every 90 minutes or so. the nurse let me watch all the greys anatomy season finale instead of making me walk in the middle of the show....haha oh the little things that make me happy!

aha sweet.

They made me walk like down the hall very slowly and that was it.

I also apparently had some internal bleeding, so I think they were trying to keep it small with me.

Regarding swimming my doctor told me to stick to freestyle (regular swimming) and to avoide breaststroke or butterfly early on. You don't want to pull you abdomen muscles to much. I returned to swimming at 2 weeks but only did freestyle for at least 2 weeks a that.

Exactly a week after my surgery, I went for a 3 mile hike. I wouldn't recommend it though! I would ask your doctor. Every doctor is different. :huh2:

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
