Hello! Newbie here... Nervous about Surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone! :w00t:

I've been reading the forums over the past week and have gotten some great information here.

I have to say the process of getting Lap Band has been super quick. I am out of pocket so I know that makes a difference but I'm still shocked.

I went to my 1st seminar on October 10th, 2010. Had already decided the surgeon I wanted to use. First appointment was today October 21st. My final pre-op appointment is scheduled for November 8th and my surgery is scheduled for November 10th!!

Has anyone else experienced such a fast process? I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Thinking about the surgery is scary!

I'm moving along pretty quick though I don' have a date yet. I had my seminar on 9/21 and I have my second consult appt on the 26th when they will submit to ins. They tell me it is about a 1 week turnaround for approval and then I get a date. So, I should be in mid-November.

The process went extremely quick for me as well. My first information Seminar was, January 23rd 2010- I scheduled my first appointment with them two weeks later, and after my first actual visit; I had a surgery date within two weeks.

I was so nervous, anxious, scared and excited! I'm thankful though, my process wasn't months and months.

Good luck!

Well I feel like it's taking forever (but maybe I'm inpatient) Seminar was 10/11, turned in packet 10/19 and now I'm playing the waiting game. Sigh... she said at the seminar that United Health Care has been known to sometimes take 30 days for pre approval.

My insurance is a branch of United Health- Oxford. I also was told it could possibly take four weeks, however they ended up responding within two days.

I have my fingers crossed for you, it goes quick! <3

I went for my first appointment on Oct 6 and had same day social worker, nutritionist eval and nutrition class and saw the Dr and came out with a surg date for Nov 5. I could have had the surgery on Oct 26 but I opted for Nov. 5. I am amazed at how quickly everything is happening, but happy about it because I have a tendency to be a little inpatient.

I was banded in September and I completely understand the nervous feeling you're going through. Almost canceled my surgery because I was so scared. Now I realize it was the best thing I've done in a long time. Down 37 pounds so far. Good luck on your journey.:blushing:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
