Hungry, normal?!!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I am almost 2 weeks post surgical and have started on mushies. I am getting REALLY hungry though. Like most new bandees I have little restriction at this point, but please give me reasurance that this will get better once I have a fill. I also notice that I am hungrier/can consume more in the evening. This also seems quite common for many bandees, right?

Okay- dare I say it- there does not seem to be a huge difference for me.:phanvan :cry ;)

Most people do not note a big difference in how they feel between the resolution of post-op swelling and the 1st (or 2nd, or 3rd...) fill.

As far as hunger goes, even when you get to your sweet spot, you will STILL get hungry - it just takes less to make the hunger go away, and you stay un-hungry for longer.

Remember that hunger is not the enemy - it's not being able to satisfy that hunger that has been the problem for most of us.

You may not notice that much of a difference even after your first fill - chances are you will be eating waaaay less than pre-band, but you may still feel pretty much the same, even though you are eating less. That's the key, though - you WILL be eating less. So even though your appetite may feel the same, you will still be eating less. How much less will really depend on how you react to the restriction of fills. Do not despair if it takes you multiple fills to really feel the restriction you're looking for.

Use this time to practice chewing and eating slowly, and remember that once you move to solids it's a whole 'nuther ball game.

I felt that way too when I had my band and my doctor reassured me that it was normal. She told me that everyone heals at their own rate, but to be safe stick to your diet. So, what I did was started always keeping my bottle of Water because often our thirst trigger our stomach. Plus you should enjoy this period of simple meals...Try everything that your doctor put on your menu so you will not get bored too quickly.

Best off luck with your recovery!

Thanks ladies! Makes me feel better. I have my 2 week appt with Dr Cribins today. So we shall see.

By the way- does anyone drink coffee? Or is this a total no-no?

The reason my doctor gave for avoiding caffein is because it dehydrates you. Decaf should be ok. (I still have my one cup of "leaded" in the a.m.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
