4 days out and still can't eat all I'm supposed to

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 10/15 (4 days ago). I am on full liquid diet, but have trouble getting in the 60 gms of Protein that I am supposed to eat. If I eat too much or too fast it hurts....will I ever be able to eat everything that I'm supposed to eat?

Also, this hurts more than I thought it would. I had a hysterectomy in 2003, and I thought this would hurt less because of laproscopic procedure. But I seem to be taking a long time to heal.

My doctor did tell my husband that I had adhesions that he fixed - so that may be why I'm recovering slower. But I am a little depressed today. Is this a normal feeling?:cursing:

YES!! you are very normal...your only 4 days out! most people 4 days out feel like crap. I personally was miserable 4 days out..could barly get down my Water let alone the Protein. I think I got about 20 grams of protein in and 20oz of water in on a good day and my dr said during the first couple weeks its ok not to get it all in...it took me about 2 weeks until I could really start pushing more water and protein. Some people whiz through the surgery and some others have a harder time and more pain and discomfort. It will get better!! hang in there and tough it out! I ended up calling my doctor about 7 days out because I was still in so much discomfort he ended up going in my band and pulling out 2 cc's that were not suppose to be in there and I started feeling better after that.you should be having your week check up soon so talk to the dr. than! Good luck!!

Well put by Nicole!

Don't hurt yourself to force liquids in, but do talk it over with your doctor.

DO sip, sip, sip Water all day long. Just little, teeny sips as often as you can to stay hydrated. Hydration is most imprtant.

And if you are in a lot of pain or something doesn't feel right, don't hesitate to call your doctor, that is what we pay them for.

Right now all you need to focus on is hydration. If you stay hydrated this week you will be fine. My doctor said not to stress about anything else until I was ready to down those shakes.< /p>

I'm 7 days out. I am in alot more pain than i thought I would be too! At first I thought that maybe I was being a baby about it but really im in pain either way so I just decided to take it for what it is. I just stopped taking the pain meds yesterday. My best friend has been the sf pudding cups. they have protien and go down pretty well. I also found a few that dont tase too bad with beneprotien mixed in. you can also try the carnation instant Breakfast no sugar added warmed up, that was helpful for me too! warm goes down better than cold right now, for me anyway. Good Luck! you will feel better! I feel almost human again. Just take your time to heal and rest!

I am almost 3 weeks post op and I now feel fine. It is a rough time for a while. I just recently bought some unflavored Protein to add to my carnation instant Breakfast but you can also add it to Soup, etc. I think it is hard to get all of the protein in until you actually go to real food. Hang in there, your doing fine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
