Those of you that take anti depressants...

Recommended Posts

I know there is a mental health board here but it doesn't seem to be very popular so I have a question.

I've been very happy on Prozac 40 mg for a year now. I have depression and anxiety.

Anyway the last 3 weeks I've been tired, sleeping a lot, irritable, sad and I'm worrying a bit more than normal. I also have little to no patience with my kids. Nothing else has changed in my life. Do you think this is a phase or is time to go back to the doctor now?

Thanks for any advice!

Hello! I am on Abilify for bi-polar, adderall for depression and just added Prozac for anxiety. I noticed about 6 mos after surgery that I started feeling A LOT of anxiety, hence the addition of Prozac. If you don't feel right, I would go back to the doctor. I feel much better these days.

Good Luck!

Weight loss has a massive physiological effect - and thus it has to effect our dosing of antidepressants. I have been on Prozac 10 mg for a year - and I also feel like the control it gave me has slipped a little. I take liquid so I have bumped my daily up just a tad and I think that has been working well. I would definitely go to your doctor.

I have bipolar, so I know how debilitating deppression is. 3 weeks is a long time, I would go in and see your doctor for sure. He may want to up your dose or try a different med. Hope you feel better soon!

I take several meds daily so I actually put them together in a daily med box, 7 days at a time that way I'm sure I don't miss anything.

I am bipolar and lean towards depression so I can relate. I would call your doctor, as he is the final decision maker besides yourself.

Sometimes I "think" I am having a tough day and all of a sudden am just certain that it is going to excelerate one way or the other. Usually I sleep on it a night or two and by then I know if I really am having symptoms or just stressing.

You know your body better than anyone, so trust your decision.

Interesting question.

I am on Paxil for anxiety and have been on 20mg for almost the whole 3 years. I had not thought about how the weight loss would affect dosing....I would think the dose would go down as the weight does, but reading here it seems the opposite.

Def check in with your doctor. The meds can be dangerous if not dosed correctly. Feel better. I know that anxiety sucks.

Amanda- didnt you just recently have a hysterectomy? That could be screwing with your hormones and making you more depressed. I think you should go back to the doctor and have him adjust your meds. You have had 2 surgeries in the past several months so I feel its natural for some more depression to set it. Good luck.

Yep I did and even though they left my ovaries my Ob/Gyn did say that they can and usually do shut down for a while after a hysterectomy. I have an appointment for my second fill tomorrow so I'm hoping my family doc can see me after that.

Body fat is mildly estrogenic. As you lose body fat, serum estrogen levels increase, which can cause changes in mood. Throw in a recent hysterectomy, and it's no wonder you're in turmoil!

It's probably a good idea to check in with the doctor--dose changes in meds sometimes are necessary. Your gyne may want to address the hormonal swings, too.

It's also not a bad idea to hook up with a good therapist; there can be grief associated with the changes we're going through, and good guidance can help.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
