Lactose intolerant after the band?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got lactose intolerant AFTER the band? I was able to eat and drink dairy products before I was banded but now cheese, yogurt and milk really upset my tummy.

Is it common for that to happen? I think I may have read about this before on LBT...

I was intolerant before the band, but since the band it seems to have gotten worse. Maybe it's because I've been on liquids for 3 weeks and all my Protein comes from dairy? I don't know, but I have to take Lactaid pills with any dairy now. :)

Hi,

I think I have been lactose intolerant most of my life, but after being banded for nearly 4 years, I think it has become more uncomfortable. I seem to run a slight fever if I eat a lot of dairy product. I think the milk product aggravates or inflames my stomach area. Gas is still very offensive but I can't seem to digest it. I used to eat a lot of cheese for Protein, but now have to lay off dairy unless I plan on being off a day or two. I am going to speak to my medical doctor about this because it has taken me a couple of years to figure out what makes me run a slight fever. Since I quit eating the dairy as much, I do not run a fever. Kinda' odd, huh?

I have lost 116 pounds and below goal weight. The lap band saved my life.

I have a friend that became lactose intolerant after a gastric bypass. Not sure if it is a WLS thing.....

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
