4 weeks post-op...still having diarrhea!

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to still be having diarrhea nearly a month after surgery?

Sorry, I know this is a little TMI, but I am getting concerned. I am eating solid foods, and had my first fill last week. I am losing weight on schedule and everything else is great, but the sudden diarrhea is getting REALLY old! Please tell me this will pass soon!

diarreah for 4 weeks does not sound normal, I would call my drs office if I were you. usually it's Constipation that they warn of us because of the lack of food and the pain meds...be careful and call a professional who can tell you what to do. good luck

You should try this probiotic called Culturelle. It's easily found at a drug store or Drugstore.com. It's cheaper online there. What this product does is restore healthy bacteria in your intestine to keep you regular and over the long term it boosts your immune system. My daughter had toddler diarrhea and her gastrointerologist told me to give it to her. It's not some snake oil homeopathic junk. This is trusted by medical doctors. It really works. I am taking it daily now to make sure my intestines healthy and to boost my immune system since I am eating so much less. It comes in capsule form and if you can't swallow, you can just open up the capsule and sprinkle the powder on cold food or drinks. It has no flavor.

I was having the same problem... dr said to try mixing my Protein Shakes with soy milk or lactaid as it just might be too much for my system to handle... the lactose in the Protein Powder plus milk. It helped a lot.

I agree - if you drink Protein Shakes or have a lot of sorbitol it can have a laxative effect on you.

I drink 1 - 2 a day and have loose stools at least 2 times a day. Plus the build up of gas doesn't help either! I don't worry too much about it because I feel fine otherwise.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
