Explain the no drinking rule to me....

Recommended Posts

okay my doc says no drinking 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after a meal.

Here's my question.... If I wait 30 minutes afterwards and then I drink a 20 oz bottle of Water isn't that still just going to wash the food out of my pouch? or is that why we are supposed to take tiny sips? I was also told to take only tiny sips through out the day. Never large drinks or gulps of anything.

I guess my thing is if my pouch is about the size of an egg then it won't take much Fluid to fill that up right? So once it's full of Fluid then the food is just washed right through. Correct?

My nutritionist told me 2-4 oz every 15 minutes. Up to 30 minutes before meals and AFTER 60 minutes after meals.

I am a newbie, banded 9/23 this is what my doctor explained to me....wait 30min. before a meal as to not fill your pouch with liquid then the food intake you may become to "full" then wait 30min after so you can absorb the nutrients of your meal, then we can drink. i wouldn't guzzle or gulp Water, i was told sips throughout the day too.. i just keep a bottle of water with me at all times and sip on it until 30 before meal time.....hope that helps a little..

As far as I understand the not drinking rule is to prevent throwing up of getting stuck.

After the 30 minutes I drink as much as I want as fast as I want without any problems.

In the very beginning right after my surgery I was advised to drink slowly but now I just guzzle it down.

The rules loosen a little as you get further along. I can drink all the way up until it's time to eat. Once I eat, I can't drink during or for 30 mins after.

Personally, I hurt really bad if I try to drink while I'm eating. I rarely do it, but once in a while I forget while we're out to dinner.

I also can guzzle liquids with no problem, unless I have just had a fill.

Best advice is to keep following the rules, so when you get fills you're already in the right mindset.

Liquid during meals does a couple of things. First, it makes it easier for food to move out of the pouch quickly. Secondly, when you have restriction, it takes up space---and reduces your ability to get the nutrients you need. (Once you reach restriction, it becomes really uncomfortable to drink while eating; I think it's less important earlier on, but it's a good time to establish the habit.)

My doctor's rule is that it's ok to drink right up to the first bite--but then not for 90 minutes after eating. This really increases my satiety.

I have restriction now, and have never had to take tiny sips--I still don't. I can gulp, but only about 4 ounces at a time. It doesn't take long for that to move through, though---I can guzzle a lot of Fluid with no problem at all. (I've never even been told to take tiny sips--just to listen to my body.)

I drink right up until I take that first bite, then no more until about 30 minutes after a meal. I do this only because I get end up sliming if I try to drink while I'm eating. I also wasn't told, nor need, to take small sips. Although occasionally I'll take a big gulp and my throat will just lock up and all i can do is stand over the sink and let it run back out.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
