Help-I'm Really Hungry

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days post-op and started mashed/soft diet today.

I made meatloaf with lean ground turkey and focused dinner on 3-4 oz of the meat. I had about 2 tablespoons of corn and instant mashed potatoes. I ate slow and chewed very well.

My problem is I am still very hungry. I don't want to continue eating and am quite sure I hit my Protein quota for the day. How can a satisfy my hunger at this stage?

Also, why to I hiccup after I eat and drink one bite, one sip.

It's usually only one time and it doesn't hurt or anything.

Thanks much.

Obviously you haven't been following the thread on "general lapband surgery discussion" forum in which a thread was started calling your type of post "bitching and moaning". I took the other position.

Of course you're going to be hungry because you haven't had a fill and your capacity for food and hunger is pretty much what it was pre-band. A lot of people will tell you to make sure you get enough Protein and Water in each day. That is important but you will probably be hungry until your get your first fill or even after that until you reach your sweet spot. Just continue to follow your doctor's advice for post-band diet and food choices. I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks post-op but like I've posted before - WLS surgeons are all over the place with their recommendations.

The phrentic nerve that causes hiccups when irritated is close to where the band is placed and I think it just gets irritated when we eat. If you only do it once, it's no big deal.

Good luck to you.

When I was struggling with no/little restricion I found that if I ate Protein based meals and no simple carbs then I was less hungry- For me eating things like potatoes triggers the carb monster and I just want to eat more and more... I used a lot of recipes on the Atkins website (lowered that fat a bit though for some of em)

WOW! Your sarcasm is really annoying!!:smile2:

Her post was asking for advice because she didn't feel full. It wasn't anywhere near the bitching and moaning described in the other thread. But I guess you really need to prove a point and keep this "disagreement" going. Well you won. Hooray. :glare:Now let's focus on helping someone who asked for help!!

Sorry gracierose for crashing your thread.

My nutritionist has told me many times, if you eat the type of balanced meal you describe and you're still hungry and you absolutely "have to" eat, go for a little more Protein.< /p>

Any reason you feel compelled to be rude? I am not moaning and bitching. I asked 2 simple questions. While I appreciate your constructive feedback, you can keep your destructive one liners to yourself.:smile2:

She wasn't being rude. There is a thread called titled bitching/moaning in the General Lap Band Surgery board. If you go and read her response, it is very helpful. Go ahead and take a quick trip over there and then you'll realize she wasn't being rude. :tt2:

As for your hunger, that is normal. Pre-Band you're probably used to eating all of the time. Now, that you can't your body has created the need for food - whether it be physical or mental. It will get easier with time.

Hi Gracie,

While it's very common to still be hungry on small meals before your first fill, there is something else going on here.

You might consider rethinking your vegetable choices. Both corn and potatoes tend to be high glycemic foods. In very basic terms what this means is that these foods tend to make our blood sugar spike and then when the levels drop down again, we're hungrier sooner. :smile2:

I'm not saying you can never have these foods, but if hunger is a problem.. making a change might help. Are there some green veggies you like? Broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, green Beans, brussel sprouts are all lower on the glycemic index.

Here's a list that might be helpful:

Low Glycemic Index Vegetables

This gives a basic explanation of the GI and it's effect on hunger:

The Glycemic Index

Hang in there, it gets easier with fills.

I'm 14 days post op and just saw my doctor this morning. I was on a two week liquid diet and now I'm on soft foods. One thing that he is very strict with is carbs. None, ziltch, nada for a whole year! Yes, a whole year no carbs. He said it will stop up the band, get stuck, make your blood sugar spike and stall weight loss. He did say I could have refried Beans provided that they are fat free and mashed well and lentils. Those are really high Fiber healthy carbs, but I can only have them occasionally. You might want to cut out the potatoes right away. I'm not a fan of this no carb rule being that I am a carb whore!! I love them. I like to say that I'm not fat, it's just the Pasta you're seeing. Carbs will sabotage your weight loss.

Keep eating more Protein and drink a shake. The shakes will fill your stomach and give you even more Protein. I'm sure you are sick of the shakes like the rest of us, but they give you a good bang for your buck. Even drink some milk. My doctor told me straight up that the next two weeks I'll be hungry so I know I have to deal with it.

Today I ate very thinly sliced turkey, tofu, a tiny bit of meatloaf, and one bite of fish. I also had two jars of baby food fruit. I added some Benefiber to the fruit since my body has been virtually Fiber free for two weeks. I found that I was eating out of bordem a few times today so I have to be super diligent and keep busy so I don't slip into my bad habits again. Hang in there, take it hour by hour, day by day. I'm reminding myself that this is a slow process so I have to foucs.

No carbs for one year? So no vegetables?

No carbs for one year? So no vegetables?

That's right. No carbs for a year. No veggies that are grown under ground so no potatoes, carrots(rarely), sweet potatoes, etc. Can't eat bread, Pasta or rice. He is strict, but he is also very successful with his patients. With over 1900 bands placed, I think he is probably on to something. Will I slip, sure, but I didn't risk life and limb during surgery to blow this. It will suck big time, but honestly, these past two weeks with virtually no carbs has been so much easier than I could have ever imagined. I ate carbs like a crack addict smoked his rocks. Without the daily carb crashes I feel great. I have a major sugar aversion right now which is from not eating any. I am happy happy!! One day at a time is how I'll approach this.

You do know that baby food fruit probably had more carbs in it than some fresh cooked vegies (i.e. broccoli)?

Until you get some type of restriction, you will still be hungry because the band isn't doing its job yet.

My doc's advice was, "If you're hungry, eat...but make good choices."

I'd clarify with him whether he meant 'no carbs' or 'no high carbs'. Since he/you specified 'no veggies grown under ground', you may still be able (and should) eat low carb vegies like salads, broccoli, etc. Even Atkins, a proponent of a low carb diet stressed the addition of low carb vegies to his diet. You need the Vitamins and minerals found only in these foods.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
