Slip or Dilation

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Let me give you some background. In July I was having heartburn and reflux so I called the Dr. Went in & had a UGI & it showed a very very small esophageal dilation (stretched pouch). They removed some Fluid and gave me some heartburn meds and said we would do a check-up in Sept to see if it helped (unless symptoms got worse). Well the symptoms didn't get worse, in fact I thought I was getting better (no nightly reflux and less heartburn), so I went for my 2nd UGI in Sept. This time the pouch is HUGE! It is so large they aren't sure if I am that stretched or if the band slipped. They drained my band empty and I go back AGAIN Nov 18th for another UGI to see if draining helped at all or if I need surgery. Don't you get sick with a slip? I never threw up and I could and can still eat. In fact I have had my band 9 months and only ever threw up once or twice and that was way back in the beginning. I am so scared I will lose my band and that I will gain weight back. Have any of you heard of this "fixing" itself? I am a natural worrier and waiting until Nov is KILLING me!!

I am fairly new to this as well...but, I have read alot of posts on here and I have seen where doctors will do an unfill to try and fix a pouch dilation/slip. From my understanding, the logic is that once the band is unfilled it will relax enough around the stomach so that it can go back into place. I also have read where it was suggested that you go back onto your liquid diet during this time as to allow it time to heal. Kind of like starting over from scratch with post op instructions. I'm sure you can dig around the forums and read more info on the subject...but, just thought I would let you know what I have read thus far on the subject. Good luck to you and I hope the problem resolves itself without any further surgery!

Hi:

I had a small slip that wouldn't repair itself so I got rebanded after almost 3 years. I didn't know I had slipped. I went in to get a fill because my scale was creeping up and I could eat more. Dr. surprised me when he said I had slipped. I don't have any idea when or how the slip came.

Good luck. I love my band #2. Today I am finally just overweight again. My original high weight was 324. I got as low as 174 (August 2008). Got up to 208 when my band wasn't working. Today I'm 189!

Hope your band works again soon.

Sue

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
