Gained weight from intial consult then started loosing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I messed up and gained 5lbs after my intial consult durning the summer months. I have been on my liquid diet since wend. I am around what I was give or take a few lbs @ consult. But I'm terrifed the dr. will cancel my surgery. I go to the Dr. for my preopt tomarrow. Any advise? I know this is my fault I should have been watching it better. I'm in the right place now, but afraid it may be too late.

My surgeon would cancel if I gained during the pre-op diet, because it proved non-compliance. The pro-op is meant to shrink the liver and make the surgery quicker and safer.

Did yours say he would cancel if you gained after the initial consult? Mine did not.

Were you required to loose a percentage of your body weight pre surgery? I had to loose 30 pounds prior to surgery. As mentioned by a previous poster the doctors do want to shrink your liver. Another question is whether you are a low BMI patient. I think the lower the BMI the less strick doctors tend to be about presurgery loss in general. The less you weigh the less fat they have to deal with during the surgery.

I actually have lost some weight like 4lbs during my pre-opt diet. The problem is It has been 6 or 7 months since my consult. During this time I had summer vaccations and I gained 5 or 6lbs. Now I think I am one or two lbs more than I was at consult. My BMI according to an internet site is 36.3. I am really stressing about my apt tommarow. I know it is my fault, I should have been more carful during summer. But since then I have gotten my head and habits in the right place.

Just tell your surgeon what happened.

The purpose of the two week pre-op diet is to shrink the size of your liver and make the surgery easier. As long as you were careful with the pre-op diet immediately before the surgery I see no reason why it should be a problem.

If you were able to diet and lose weight for the last six months by yourself, then you wouldn't need this surgery, would you?

Thank you all. I feel better. I go in this morning so we will see. Say a prayer and cross your fingers for me:) I don't think they will be much of a weight difference, probably 2 to 3 lbs. Which is crazy because my clothes fit way looser than they have in a year:)

Well, what happened??

I was at about your BMI, I lost 8 lbs on my 2-week pre-op. So, you'd most likely lose that little bit you gained.

My previous post was not too clear (and had a typo :smile2:). My surgeon would only cancel if I had gained on the 2-week diet just before surgery, because there is no way I could have gained while being in compliance with his orders. Otherwise, after my initial consult, he did not have a requirement for me.

YEAH! My scale and the Doctors was way off. I actually have lost 8 1/2 lbs since my intial consult. I was worried about nothing. Since I have only been on my preopt diet for two weeks, my dr was very happy with me. Surgery is a go. I'm scheduled for Oct 20. It will be here before you know it. I am so relieved.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
