I'm not an expert by a long shot since I am only 8 days out. However, I am going through peri-menopause and have lost 16.5 pounds with the pre-post-op diets.

I do feel better mentally and my hotflashes have actually decreased. Fluid retention is down and skin in clearing up. I'm sure this is a result of decrease in sodium, chocolate, fat and an increase in h20.

Hi,

I was banded in mid-Jan. of this year and have lost 83 pounds so far. I will have lost 100 or more by the end of the year. I use HRT as well and have lost weight faster than most people in my surgeon's practice. This will not be a factor. Start walking now and don't stop. Being banded is life changing and wonderful.

I am 52.

I started to get menopausal at 45 but did not realise, because I had a Mirena coil, which releases a type of progestogen into the womb. I had had no periods for a few years so had no idea I was menopausal.

I thought it was just hot, while my kids kept telling me I was going through the change -but did I believe them?

Then I got thyroid problems and put on weight big time. What ever I did, I was hungry and could not lose weight.

I had the lap band in desperation after low carbing, calorie counting, weightwatchers etc all to no avail.

I am a year out and have lost 60% of my excess weight, which was my first goal. I am due another fill so I am hungry at the moment but I KNOW when I have another fill and get back my restriction, I will start to slowly loose again.

The menopause makes us overeat for a variety of reasons-your satiation is slow to kick in so you eat more than you used to, you exercise less, your daily living uses less calories etc etc etc

But at the end of the day, when the lap band is working and you have good restriction, you feel less hungry, you eat less, and so you lose weight.

It is as simple as that. The menopause has little to do with it in the end.

Hi,

I was banded the day before Bree, and have lost the same amount--how funny is that?

I am perimenopausal, and have had no difficulty losing. I do follow a low-carb regimen and exercise every day.

Body fat is mildly estrogenic, so losing can cause serum estrogen levels to rise. (I think this actually makes me feel better, in terms of hormone balance.)

My surgeon did not require any pre-op diet at all.

Your doctor will let you know what s/he wants you to do, vis-a-vis preop diet. During the 3-month supervision, my doctor did not specify any particular diet; I was permitted to use any regimen I wanted, and was required to lose 6 pounds in that time frame. (This was dictated by insurance.)

Doctors vary so much in terms of what they require for the one- to two-week preoperative diet. Most do have their patients follow some sort of carb-controlled diet to help deplete the liver's glycogen (carbohydrate) stores, so that the liver is smaller and easier to maneuver around.

Some have their patients stick to Protein Shakes during this time. Others (like mine) combine Protein shakes with some food (lean protein and nonstarchy veggies).

And some don't require any specific preop diet at all.

Yours will let you know what s/he wants you to do

Sure - Carnation Instant Breakfast with 8oz of milk for 10 days. I alternated between sugar free and regular.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
