Band Slipping...always wondered

Recommended Posts

I, along with many others I think, always keep it in the back of my head about my band slipping....How would you know if it slipped?? Are you in pain?? Are you sick?? or can you just go back to eating a lot of food and never know it slipped?? Just curious if anyone knows about slipping bands?? :puke:

I asked my doc. how you would know the band slipped. He said suddenly you can't keep anything down, not even Water. Of course if you've just had a fill then that is probably the cause. He said it slips in about 3% of cases, so the odds are with us. Take care

It could be that you can't get or keep anything down.

Sometimes it is a sudden loss of restriction.

The ability to eat a lot more than previously.

It all depends on how badly it has slipped.Sometimes it can be fixed by unfilling the band for a couple of weeks. Sometimes it is necessary to replace or reposition the band.

My surgeon says the biggest reason bands slip is because the surgeon who put it in didn't attach it in place with enough stitches. He says the documentation says to use just a few stitches, like two or three. He says he goes well above that, and uses as many as it takes to give it a solid placement, so it won't slip as long as the stitches hold. As in all things, YMMV. :puke:

User error is probably the biggest reason why bands slip.

From experience on this, I've had my band since August 09 with no problems until 3 weeks ago. I started vomiting and having trouble keeping food down, call into my doctor for appt for next week. But symptoms got worse with having trouble keeping liquid down and heartburn. So I got in yesterday had an upper gi, which showed by band had slipped. For me user error was not the issue. It's something that just happened. I have lost over a 100lbs and have done everything by the book. For me the took out everything in my band and am having surgery this Saturday to either revise or remove the band. My surgeon says he won't know what will happen until he gets in there and see's how the tissue looks. He also said that slippage is only in 5% of everyone. So my only word of advice would be is if you start to have trouble with vomiting go see your doctor.
