Gas Keeping Me Miserable

Recommended Posts

Funny that so many have suggested heating pad. I've found that had helped me in the past as well (as well as hot baths) and when I asked a nurse assistant for a heating pad while in the hospital, she poo-pooed the idea with some theory about "well, when gas is heated, it expands and don't you think that will hurt worse?". What is she, a physicist in her spare time? LOL Anyway, the night nurse didn't argue with me and got one for me and it helped.

I had my surgery on 10/1/10 and had a rough time the first couple of days with the gas pain in my shoulder and burping, etc. Then I started to feel better and actually came back to work yesterday after my post-op checkup which was a pretty good report (lost 9 1/2 pounds so far). So today I started getting this excruciating pain in my lower left abdomen, nowhere near my port sight or stitches or anything. I'm waiting on a call back now from my doctor. I have no clue what it is but I certainly hope its gas and not anything more severe.

YIKES!!!! I am scheduled for surgery on 11/25. This is a big fear of mine! The reason....I teach elementary kids and they are brutally honest! How long does this gas last? Only at the beginning or throughout the weight :w00t:loss process?

I am 5 weeks post op and the gas didn't last that long for me probably a good two weeks and now I burp when I eat too much but not constantly like at first. I think you will be fine, it's a big adjustment period but I feel good now pretty normal.

I think after the 4th or 5th day it finally left. I did take some GasX finally, and wish I had taken it earlier. It's not like flatulence, it is more like pains in the left shoulder and stomach areas. I am 9 days out and it's been a while since bothering me. I am still sore on my insides from the Dr maneuvering things around. Feel good otherwise.

well im 3 days post op. the gas does suck! And i have to say I was never so thankful to fart as i was yesterday! Each little pass of gas is like a small victory for me! My advice..heaing pad gas x, Im using phazyme but close to the same thing! THe pain from the gas is worse than any of the pain related to surgical procedures for sure! Good luck everyone!

I just read your reply and our situations are similar. I am bordering on deyhdration because I can not get any Water down. The gas around the stomach is compressing it in addition to the banding. I am having serious regrets, and have been feeling depressed as well. I don't so much as care about not eating as I do about not being able to even drink water. I've been walking daily but nothing helps. The doctor was able to pull about 1 cc of air out of the band at my post op, you may want to ask him to try that. It only helped me slightly. My neighbor had it last year and said she had the same problems but they resolved within 2 weeks. I think we just need to hang in there but it really is one of the hardest things I've been through physically.

I had the same problem! I felt air trapped by my port and it hurt soo bad to move or breath! I had to take Gas-x to help the pain and liquid vicodin because the walking did not seem to help.

I had to laugh a little bit when I read the subject line. The gas was HORRIBLE for the first (2) weeks or so for me. I swear I was passing gas non-stop or burping. My chest hurt really bad for probably (3) weeks. The gas will eventually pass! (Pun intended :)) I still have bad gas now though. I think if I chew gum I get gas, so I'm taking some OTC gas relief occasionally. Otherwise, everyone has just been warned.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
