Surgeon Fills Band during Surgery

Recommended Posts

So EXCITED!

I found out during my pre-op appointment (yesterday), that my surgeon fills the band during surgery. He says that he has been doing this for 2 years now and has found that this more aggressive approach has several benefits:

1. Patients lose weight their first month

2. Less "trial & error" with fills when trying to find the green zone of weight loss

3. Does wonders mentally for a patient when they can control hunger and start losing weight immediately

4. Due to the strict 14 day pre-op diet that he has his patient go on, his patients are better able to handle the immediate fill

5. If on the slim case a patient can't tolerate the fill, it is very easy to remove some of the saline.

Of course you are given a barium x-ray before you are discharged from the surgery center.

I hope I wrote down everything correctly! I will also be getting a new kind of slimmer port with my band.

I LOVE MY SURGEON (and his nurse, Nate (i think this was his name) was super sweet too).

10-15-10 can't come soon enough!!

I would love to hear your thoughts-

-CB

That is exciting because if you can tolerate it you will have a headstart. But you do need to be aware that a number of people cannot tolerate the additional restriction on top of the post op swelling.

There have been a number of people here that really struggled after surgery, hated their bands, couldn't get anything down including Water etc and when they went to see their Dr's it turned out that their bands had been partly filled at surgery.

Being aware of the potential problems is probably the best defence because you will know why they are happening and that you need to go back and get some of the saline removed.

All the best, hope it goes well.

Hi, My doctor does not fill band until a month after surgery. I have my surgury Oct, 12th, go back in a week for a check up, then Nov. 8th the first fill. Wish I could have it filled at the time of the surgury, but I made up my mind this time I will not try to do it my way...that's part of what got me into this fix. Good luck to you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
