Weight Gain Question

Recommended Posts

I had surgery 1 week ago today. I was on Clear Liquids until yesterday with no Protein. Yesterday I was able to add to that diet cottage cheese, yogurt, Protein Shakes, pudding, mashed veggies, mashed potatoes, and so on. Basically a pureed diet. I know I should not weig myself too often, but I could not resist. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to have gained back a pound. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a reaction to having basically no calories to finally having some. Everything was low fat or fat free. I am freaking out that I will gain back the 12 pounds I lost and confused how eating only 800 calories can make you gain a pound. Thanks.

Perfectly normal to gain some weight when you reintroduce foods back into your diet.

I dropped 20lbs the First week after Surgery. Then I started adding things back to my Diet and gained 10lbs Back. Most of this was Water weight because I couldn't get anything down for the first 3 days I was home. I dropped 15lbs these days.

I guess What I am saying is that yes adding food back will make you gain some weight back. Also I found that adding Carbs back seemed to make me gain weight faster.

You have to remember that you basically just starved your body and the reaction is to store the calories you just fed it to protect itself. When your body recognizes that it has been given enough calories to survive you will start to lose again. It's just a survival mode thing. Don't get upset, your bodly can't physically gain a pound of fat unless you have eaten an excess of one pound in calories.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
