March27 1 Posted October 5, 2010 Has anyone had the problem of liquid pooling in your throat at night? It doesn't matter when I stop eating or drinking...when I take my meds...etc. I have tried an hour, two hours, etc. before bedtime and nothing works! Liquid, doesn't seem to be acid...I don't feel like I have reflux it almost seems like drainage or saliva....? It pools at the base of my throat and I wake up feeling like I am drowning! I can only sleep on my left side, if I try the right or my back there's no way I can stay more than 15 minutes or the liquid begins to pool. I also have a CPAP. Anyone out there having the same type of problem? I am 2 1/2 years banded and lost 75 pounds.... 1 joddav17 reacted to this
Cleo's Mom 257 Posted October 5, 2010 Can you try sleeping one night without the CPAP? Is that possible just to see if somehow if it might be causing the problem? If not, then you need to see your doctor because even though it doesn't feel like reflux, it is. It doesn't matter the source, it's the fact that it's not going down. So either you are too tight or there is something anatomical going on. But you should talk to your doctor about this.
grateful1 0 Posted October 11, 2010 I'm 2 years banded and have the same problem! Although I don't use a CPAP and sometimes my pooling is acidic. When it is, I have to get up, force myself to throw it up, then take a chewable antacid and go back to sleep propped up until the antacid goes down. I also can only sleep on my left side unless I'm propped up. I'm thinking my band is just a tad too tight and I have an appointment to get a little taken out at the end of the month. I also think I'm too tight because I haven't been able to eat fruits or veggies for quite a while now and I'm starting to feel unhealthy. I also haven't lost weight in several months because I've been eating more mushy and smooth foods and getting enough calories to sustain my current weight. Thankfully I'm not gaining, but still! I only have 20 lbs. to go and I think it might be best to get a slight unfill and just go on a diet and eat more veggies! I can always get another fill if I start gaining. In all this time I still haven't found the "sweet spot" some people talk about. I'm just either too tight or not tight enough... never just right. It's a constant struggle for me. cwm812 11 Posted October 11, 2010 I had this problem, too, for a short while. I handled it like you all have. I stopped drinking anything after 7 pm. It didn't work. I also was making lots of weird gurgly sounds every time I ate. It was embarrassing. I didn't get stuck all that often, but eating was becoming a real chore. My solution....I had .3 cc removed from my band. The problem has completely gone away. I can now even drink in the middle of the night and go back to bed in five minutes. This makes it a lot easier to get all my Water in. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I think it has something to do with being banded for awhile. I am 2.5 years out, too, and lately I've been getting tighter. Right now, I contemplating having some more of my fill removed. My last unfill worked so well, I actually lost weight because I was able to eat better foods (not sliders). Cindy
grateful1 0 Posted October 12, 2010 okay, I couldn't wait until the end of the month to get an unfill so I went in today and had .25 cc's taken out. I'll know better in the next few days if this unfill will take care of my pooling issue! I certainly hope so... and I hope my band isn't too loose now so I won't gain weight! kris102003 0 Posted October 20, 2010 This happened to me for a very long time and I did not know why. I let it go and let it go, I was eating tums like they were candy, had weird noises when I would eat or drink, would wake up coughing cause I was choking on whatever I had drank that night. Finally due to small weight gain I went to the doctors. It turns out my band was to tight and had been for about three months. My esophagus was 8 times its normal size when they sent me immediately for my upper GI. This was due to the fact that the liquids were sitting in my throat at night tearing away at the lining. I ended up having to have my band unfilled for three months, on a liquid diet all three months and had to pray that the swelling would go down. My band ended up slipping. I have been able to get it filled again as the swelling did go down, but my band DOES NOT work the same as it did. I have gained about 30 pounds and my weight is a struggle to keep off now. I went from a size 5 to a 10 in just 6 months. I am at 6.5cc's in my 10cc band. I would speak with your doctor as soon as possible. I would hate for you to have to struggle like I am now. I took being skinny for granted!!! I wish you all luck!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I'm going next week (it's a 4 hour drive to my surgeon) to have a little taken out because I cant seem to get more than 16 oz of liquids in and can only eat about an 1/8 of a cup of food. I'm finding myself eating pretzels and cheetos because it's easier. Not good! Plus I've been having acid pool up in my throat in the middle of the night. I've never had this problem before. All this started with my last fill 2 1/2 weeks ago. I'm thinking it was a bit much...

So far so good, I can eat better foods, but I'm hoping that I still have enough restriction not to gain weight. I made an another appt to see my doc in 6 weeks. If I start gaining, I'll have a little fill. I love the adjustability of the band. I think you're right about your last fill. You've waited long enough for any swelling to go done and you're still having problems. How big was that last fill? Maybe you can remove 1/2 of it and still have the restriction you want without the problems. Too tight is no good. Cindy
NH-Pam 2 Posted October 28, 2010 Hi, I've been dealing with the same issue for several months. Was going to the Dr. every 6 weeks and having fill removed, thinking that I was just too tight. Finally had a barium swallow a couple of weeks ago and it showed that the band had slipped. All my fill was removed and I'm now scheduled to have the band repositioned on Nov. 18th. Even without any fill I'm still having nighttime symptoms, I find it funny though that I do get the most relief while laying on my left side??

Think he can take out about half? ...or would that even make any difference?
smile4532 0 Posted December 5, 2010 I have been noticing some acid reflux at night when going to bed before laying down. After I go to sleep (never had enough to prevent falling asleep or anything), I never wake up with any problems, in fact it's gone if I ever wake up in the middle of the night. Maybe it's taking my meds at night that is doing it. My last fill was about 2 mos. ago and I went from 6-8ccs - pretty aggressive. I've lost about 10ish lbs. Any suggestions or thoughts? tikki420 0 Posted December 7, 2010 Yes, I had the same problem and found out it was that my band slipped! I was coughing at night also. It had been going on for quite some time. so now I am waiting to see what the next move is. I just move and the doctor said he can't put another band in. Bit after reading these blogs I think i need to find a new doctor. You might just be too tight also. Have some saline removed, that might help! I had my band put in in March of 2006 and lost 150lbs and since they took all my saline out I have gained 20 back!! Very scary! Good Luck to you but try to have some Fluid removed first! sfwaitinginma 0 Posted December 17, 2010 I had similar symptons in March this year (original band 11/08) and went to my doctor and found my stomach had prolapsed over the band (stomach was hanging over the band). So nothing was going down and at night it would come up. I had to have surgery and a new band put in right away. My doctor considered it an emergency and did the surgery on the Monday after he saw the problem on the upper GI (Friday)
UltraGeek 0 Posted December 28, 2010 I too have had this happen to me on occasion since being banded (12/2007). For me this only seems to happen when I eat late in the evening and then quickly going to bed. I will almost always wake up in the middle of the night coughing. To not have this happen, I will try to eat my meal before 8pm. I will also have a glass of Water around 10pm before going to bed around 11. It seems to work well for me. StrangeDz 1 Posted December 28, 2010 I ended up having .25 taken out of my band and it made all the difference in the world. I dont have the night time heartburn or pooling/coughing anymore! YAY!!!
