OVER IT and I dont think I am getting enough fluids!!!!

Recommended Posts

Surgery Date: 9/30 and so far I have been in He??!!! The first day I started off with nausea and vomiting and the days after just nauseous and horrible indigestion.

I think the indigestion is hindering me in getting the adequate liquid and Protein I need. Although I feel hungry (i think), I feel like everything I drink gets stuck and I have a huge lump in my chest and I am scared to make it worse. However I have not vomited since day 1...

So today: Woke up actually feeling normal and was sooo happy so I had a Tall Skinny vanilla Latte from Starbucks.

Then a 4oz cup of Applesauce as it says I can have it the first two weeks

in the afternoon: I tried more applesauce and Protein Water and ever since then I have had the bad stuck feeling again. This was at 4 o clock!

That's all I have had today!!!! I am starting to feel week, tired, depressed, and I want to cry! Yesterday wasnt much better. I know I am not getting the protein I need as I can barely stomach the shakes without getting nausea and indigestion! and I just so scared of making it worse!!! so I would rather not have anything!

I do have Fluid in my band... He didn't tell me how much... Should I call my doctor? Or has others experienced this and will it just go away in a few days... So ready to feel normal again... Otherwise I want it out!

At this point, I AM OVER IT!

I totally understand. I was banded on Friday 10-1-10. The first day after surgery was fine, no problems at all. However the second and third (today) have been super hard. I can't get the recommended fluids down either. The Protein Shakes taste horrible to me, I feel full super fast, and i get burpy after i drink, even Water. A couple of times yesterday and today I have had bad bouts of nausea where I probably would have thrown up, however I just waited it out, my mouth was watering really bad and I got sweaty and uncomfortable. Yuk!!! I'm with you that this better resolve itself or I will be wanting it out. I can't stand feeling sick and nauseous all the time. I'm sure I'm dehydrated at this point in time since I can't get anything down. I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day. I'm going to take some advil tonight, in case it is from swelling, since that is an anti-inflammatory, it might help...i'm also going to call dr. office in the AM and see if there is anything I can take for this nausea.

Thanks Ready,

I'm sorry to hear about anyone feeling like I am. However, its good to know I am not alone. Let me know what your doctor says. I will let you know too, he is getting a call in the morning! I feel I am getting dehydrated as well. I am just at a loss for words. I never expected it to be this difficult! My sister seemed to get through it fine!

I want to say WE CAN DO THIS... but can we?

Did you try drinking anything soon after your Starbucks? You're probably dehydrated, and should be trying to sip on something constantly. Even now, almost two years after my surgery, if I don't drink enough I get very tight and have a hard time with solids and sometimes even mushies. Next time you are able to drink anything, keep ON drinking as much as you can!

Thanks L12,

You sound like you know what you are talking about. Just started sipping Water and it feels so tight! I will keep trying! I think you are right on the dehydration...I will keep sipping. I hope I am like you in a year!

No problem, hope it helps! If not, DEFINITELY call your doctor. Also, when I'm really tight, drinking a cup of hot tea often helps to loosen me up--could be why the Starbucks went down easily for you? That's probably the most useful tip I learned from these boards, and it has come in very handy!

I'm sorry you're feeling so cruddy.

coffee (even decaf) really stimulates stomach acid production; if you are experiencing indigestion, it probably is not a good choice, at least right now.

For me, warm liquids are soothing, so many you can find an alternative.

I was banded on 9/30 too. I am doing ok but like you feel like I am not getting enough liquids. Although I am thrilled to be down 8 pounds since surgery - I feel it is a little too fast and I am dehydrated. The shoulder pain is what is killing me. It is still so awful! I am trying to get down an entire Protein Shake right now. I don't mind them, I kinda like them I just haven't been able to finish one yet. I am curious to see what your dr. says.

I had a hard time getting Water to go down the first several weeks after surgery. I really found that adding Crystal Light to my water helped it go down for some reason. Really don't think it was just the flavor, it was like it make the water easier to pass. Now after I have had my really tight first fill, water passes like it did pre-surgery.

I had a hard time "eating" and drinking the first week after surgery. I was tired from not enough Protein, and I felt terrible. I wish I would have known that it wasn't normal. I had been reading that people were having a hard time drinking, so I just assumed that what I was experiencing was normal. When I went in for my one week post-op, I told them what was going on. I ended up getting an un-fill. The band had a little less than 1 cc in it, and when they took that out, it made a HUGE difference. I was finally able to eat my purees and was able to drink without any difficulties.

You are not alone in this for sure.

I had my surgery on 9/28 and yesterday was the very first day I could keep any fluids down.

I went in this morning for my post op visit and was severely dehydrated.

My doctor wanted to send me over to the hospital for IV fluids, but since I am finally able to keep my fluids in me, I asked him to give me another day and see how that works out.

One thing I've realized is that every patient is different. I read so many positive posts and threads here, that I just had in my head that I'd sail through this procedure with a minimum of problems. Boy was I dreaming!

I am still glad I had the procedure done and I am hoping that each day that passes, it will be easier.

Thanks to everyone that replied! I called the doctor this morning and they said if it feels that tight all the time to come in and get some Fluid drained. I dont think I cant get out of the door fast enough! They said it really important to get my Protein down so come in.

I will update you after some Fluid has been taken out. I have tried to just sip on Water all day today.

HOWEVER today for the first day really the shoulder pain has started. UGH...why so late and all the sudden. Also my belly looks pregnant. How long does it take to go down???

Sorry can I gripe anymore?

xoxo

BlessedMama!

My PRovider related the shoulder pain & nausea due to irritation to Vagus nerve caused by all the manipulation during the surg. I was told for the 1st 2 weeks to drink only 2-4 ounces of Fluid at a time, one- 2 hours apart. not a tall latte right out of surgery! AAAK! I sip 2 Eas Myoplex chocolate shakes thruout the day plus sugar free gatorade, etc. I am down 10 since 9/27, a bit slower, but much more comfortable.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
