Dr. Pleatman, I have a question...

Recommended Posts

Can you, as a surgeon with experience in removing the LapBand, give me a ballpark on this?

I was dx'ed with esophageal dysmotility secondary to adjustable gastric banding. The band was removed two weeks ago and a BPD/DS was performed. Have you any idea--based on your experience or that of your colleagues--how long it takes for the esophagus to heal itself?

I'm having trouble getting in all my Water because once the esophagus "clamps down," there is no point in trying to drink anything.

Have you any wisdom to share?

Sue

Sue, I'm not yet banded but I have erosions in my esophagus and a peptic ulcer that need serious treatment before I can get lap banding. I'm hoping they will clear up so that I can have the surgery within a few mo. The dr. put me on Nexium for the esophageal problems and Prilosec for the ulcer, and within a week I'm feeling much better. I feel so sorry for you that you have had to go through so much. My dr. coated my ulcer with silver nitrate in endoscopy and said the erosion of the esophagus is unexplainable (considering I've never been banded or anything), but I do have esophageal reflux. He thinks the Nexium will take care of it, but wants to wait a couple more mo. before doing surgery. Probably a wise decision, but I'm getting antsy.

I hope you start feeling better really quickly. I'm sure not a dr., but I am a retired nurse of over 25 years. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Sounds like you have had quite a time of it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
