Negative comments about getting LapBand

Recommended Posts

it's crazy huh that people just assume that people who get the band must be lazy or looking for an easy way out.

I was overweight all my life, and now I'm not coz of the band. I have tried to lose weight before, I did and then regained. The band has been the one thing that has helped me lose and keep it off. Honestly, if I'd listened to everyone else about how I could do it without the band, I'd still be overweight today.

The band works for so many people. It helps them lose when nothing else so far has. Why would she deny you the tool you need to help you? That's nothing but downright mean and selfish, and I would ignore everything she's got to say on the subject. Or anyone else who have nothing but negative things to say about your decision.

I've been very lucky because my family has been very supportive. I think when people disapprove YOUR medical decision it's because now you've changed the dynamic of your relationship. Fat people tend to try and fade into the background and not create waves. We also defer to other people going along with their decisions.

I'm glad your family is supportive;however, your last two sentences are a huge (no pun intended) stereotype. I know far more outspoken/outgoing obese people that aren't afraid to speak their minds and make their own decisions versus what you described.

I agree that dynamics of a relationship MAY change for SOME..but this is one fat chick who is not afraid to speak her mind no matter what size she is :unsure:

My surgery isn't scheduled but it will be in the next month. I have only told my sister. I'm not telling anyone else, not even my parents. It's a personal decision and I see no reason to go through the explanations.

I really want to get LAP-BAND® done. I have already attended a seminar and I am going to proceed with trying to get LAP-BAND® surgery performed. I have a half sister that I thought I was close with until I told her that I was thinking about getting LAP-BAND®. She was very rude and nasty to me, she started saying that I am getting it because I am lazy, which is definitely not the case. She said that I would put ALL my weight back on if I were to get pregnant. She was saying how she did this and that to lose weight and I did nothing. Not true I went to the gym four times a week for an hour and still had no luck. Has anyone else encountered negativity such as this when it came to revealing your LAP-BAND® secret? :)

Have you had the lap band yet? I am scheduled for November 10th. My daughter had this about 3 years ago. Has has two babies since and lost weight while she was pregnant. Actually she lost 36 lbs with the 1stone and 8 with the 2nd child. She looks great. So good luck and don't worry about your sister, sounds like she could be jealous:thumbup:

When it comes to your success it is human nature that: 20% of the people you tell don't care; 10% really do, and the rest are jealous and hope you fail. Don't listen to any negativity. Be sure you know what you are getting into and you are truly going to be committed. The journey will not be easy but the results will be worth it. Most of all, congratulate yourself for taking a step to help yourself. Best of luck to you. I just went to a seminar and I am going through the inital approvals and evaluations. I am 44 years old, 5'4" and 215 lbs with a BMI of 37. I am doing this for me and my health. Everything else is secondary...period. Move forward and no turning back!

At this time, I haven't told many people. The ones I have are on board with me. My sister-in-law was the only one questioning my choice, only because she has clients who have done it and failed. After I explained that I have done my research and KNOW its not a magic wand she was supportive of my choice. I haven't mentioned it to any friends or other family members so we'll see what happens.

I just know this is my life and my choice and I know I have tried hundreds of times to lose and keep it off with little success. I'm doing this for me and if someone can't support me on it, then they can either get over it or not be a part of my success.

Lets prove them wrong :crying::)

Give them time, but remember at the end of the day you're doing this for yourself and no one else. When I first discussed surgery with my husband years ago he told me he couldn't respect someone who lost weight via surgery. Talked to my sister about it a few days ago and got the "but you've lost weight before, why do you need that?" and then proceeded to get upset. Both have done a 180; neither like the idea of me having surgery but my sister has since called and apologized for being selfish and my husband says he just wants me to be happy and supports me no matter what. Just have to keep telling ourselves we need to put ourselves first sometimes...

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
