No Bowel Movement 4 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Sept 29th and I haven't had a bowel movement since then. My last movement was on Monday afternoon so I'm not sure if Tuesday actually counts. However, I have been taking the Protein in and the broth as I was instructed and I haven't been able to go. My tummy isn't in any discomfort as of now I'm just getting concerned. I also started my cycle which may be TMI but normally that makes me go all the time. I'm not sure if I'm getting enough Water in me though. Today I'm going to aim at more water less protein. Has anyone experienced this?

as long as you're not experiencing discomfort, there is no cause for concern.

You're simply taking in so little that there's less moving through your body.

Anesthesia and pain meds contribute to the slowdown.

Don't be alarmed if you experience diarrhea when things do start moving; it's very common.

Thanks for asking this question! I too was operated on on 9/29 and I'm in the same boat. Glad to hear it is typical:)

My doctor told me to take milk of magnesia. While it is common to have no bowl movements post-op, it is very annoying. Hope you feel better, I did after the magnesia:thumbup:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
