Too tight for liquids, can't see surgeon until Monday?

Recommended Posts

I went in for a fill on Thursday and was fine on creamy liquids that night. Friday morning I was unable to do anything but Clear Liquids very slowly.

I called my surgeon Friday morning and they couldn't make an appt until Monday. I am miserable (and scared). At this point I am not even able to do clear liquids and even my saliva is making me sick. The lady at my surgeons when I called on Friday said just try to keep down clear liquids and if I get too dehydrated to to the ER for IV fluids...... I really hate to do that but I don't know how I am going to last another 48 hours. I can't even sleep...

Any thoughts/suggestions/guidance?

First, try warm tea to see if that will go down. Second, if that won't go down go to ER because you're going to get dehydrated and that can be very dangerous. Third, find a new band doctor as this one stinks if he can't squeeze you in when you're suffering. You may want to find a group to go to that has more than one doctor so that they have their own backup system in place for when one doctor isn't available.

I get so mad when I read about doctors that don't take care of their patients.

Please let us know how you make out.

Take care.

Sue

Since you were able to drink after the fill , it sounds like you have some swelling. Ice makes swelling go down.

I would only try ice cold liquids and maybe even an ice pack high and to the left on your belly.

I agree, they should have seen you Friday when you called in with trouble. I would bring that up when you finally do get in.

That's ridiculous. This has happened to my mom a few times. Luckily, she has a GREAT doctor who has re-opened his office.. or even met her in a general location to help her. She is EXTREMELY sensitive with her fills. and like you mentioned her saliva sometimes fills her up and makes her sick.

I would try calling again.

I've read EVERYWHERE on this site that going to the ER will be no help. They don't have experience with the band.

My mom was almost at your point before her doctor said to meet her in a close location... and she told him that she ALMOST went to the ER.. and he said they wouldn't been able to do much. and it would of cost her 500 dollars.

I hope you get some relief soon

Update: I tried the tea and couldn't even get one sip down and so I was prepared to head to the ER (without a lot of hope, bc it does seem like most of the stories I've heard they weren't equipped to do anything but IV fluids).. I decided to call my surgeon's office and have him paged, and he actually agreed to meet me at the office for an unfill. He took out .5 cc's and I feel like a totally new person now! I am sticking to Clear Liquids at least until tomorrow even though he said creamy liquids should be okay.

Thanks for the info and encouragement! That was a pretty awful experience.

So glad to hear your doc got you back in. I had this happen last week and my doc got me back in right away. It's scary when you can't swallow your own saliva, and we shouldn't have to live like that! Good luck to you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
