Lap Band or Sleeve (VSG) ???

Recommended Posts

At first I was hell-bent on getting the lap band. I knew that I wanted weight loss surgery and the reason for getting the band for one, is that it is reversible. But after a discussion with the surgeon, Im starting to lean towards getting the VSG done. All for different reasons. Anyone on here who had previously bee banded and now have the sleeve? Or any views, concerns, knowlege, or insight abt the sleeve with personal or secondary experience? Thanks!!

I was seriously considering the sleeve, but I just wasn't comfortable with having 80% of my stomach removed. My doctor explained both procedures and for me personally, I just felt more comfortable with LapBand.

Ultimately, it's your decision. I see that you are young. Weight loss for you at this age is going to be much easier than if you are over 40. I'm 51 with a couple of different metabolic issues which makes it hard for me to lose weight, yet it's coming off with the band. What I LOVE about the band is that it is reversible and adjustable. I don't know where you live, but you should get another opinion.

If you step over to the forums at VerticalSleeveTalk.com, the sister site to this one, you'll find a LOT of former lapband people who have since had it revised to the sleeve instead. They're a very friendly bunch who are full of very helpful information.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
