Emotional Roller Coaster

Recommended Posts

After a year of classes, evaluations, preparation, denial, lost charts, appeals, dropped balls, etc. I was suddenly approved and go for surgery in 11 days. I am scrambling around trying to get everything done and I feel angry instead of positive and excited. Its 7 months since I was in the classes and I feel like I have no support group. I feel like I'm taking the biggest step of my life blind folded. I found this site because I remeber I am supposed to be doing a low carb diet for two weeks prior to surgery but I see folks talking about a liquid diet, and Optifast. I'm lost. My preadmission appointment is 5 days before my surgery.

First of all CONGRATS!! you should be exciting after all that hard work and upsets you are finally doing something that you need and want!! do what ever you can to read up on the surgery. maybe call the surgeon group that will be doing the surgery they will help you.

different surgeons require different pre op diets. some only require liquids for 2 weeks or 2 days. you will get informed when you go in.

just take a deep breathe and realize your new life is just beginning!!!!

PS...just remember why you started this process to begin with....and everyone has a different pre op. I have to do Clear Liquids for three days prior, my friend did the protien Optifast shakes for two weeks...all inended to do the same thing...shrink your liver for surgery. no worries.

I understand how you're feeling. I started this process in June and from June-September things seemed to move slow (had to do the 3 month supervised diet, which was originally to be a 6 month diet). Then once my paperwork got submitted to insurance for approval, things have moved so quick.

I got approved on Tuesday, and I'm scheduled for surgery on October 15. My doctor originally said they could do surgery as early as this week, but I needed sometime to get everything together (ie. arrangements for my son on the date of surgery, pre-admission testing, etc). I'm so excited to have the surgery and start this journey, but I'm also a little nervous.

I too feel that emotional roller coaster. Like Danamomto1 I started the process in June and things were moving nicely and then at my Sept. appt. my doctor wanted to schedule me for the beginning of Oct. I was so not ready. I have an appt. this week to begin pre-admission stuff, ekg, bloodwork, chest x-ray, etc. All of my other pre-op tests have cleared me. I am hoping that I will be able to get a date near the end of Oct. Excited but so nervous and apprehensive as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
