My super exciting pre op diet

Recommended Posts

I don't have to drink Optifast or Protein for 1/2 week(s) that goodness. I can eat anything EXCEPT things with carbs, sugars and starches and then 2 days before it is liquids only. My doctor is the 2nd doctor in America to perform a lap band surgery. Apparently, it takes only 2 days to shrink your liver down to the optimal size for surgery.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I'm so excited that my surgery is a week away. Can't wait for the first day of my new life.

My Doc told me that it really depends on the patient and where they carry their Fat. He also said that African American Women were the easiest to band.

Your Liver will start to shrink when you stop eating Carbs and sugars. I was on a no Carb or Sugar diet for 2 months before my surgery. Being White Male I am one of the hardest to band. I also Started at 440lbs and the doc wanted me to lose some weight before hand. I never had to do an all liquid diet before hand. I did one the week after surgery.

Different docs, different patients, different bodies, different rules :smile2:

You didn't get a particularly liberal diet--you are getting, from food, the same things others get from Opti-Fast. A low-carb diet that will reduce the liver's glycogen stores.

My doctor's regimen is not as restrictive as many--but it is severely carb-restricted, and lasts 2 weeks.

The carb restriction is what shrinks the liver. You can achieve that using shakes---or a number of other ways. Like the one your doctor recommends :(

The two days of liquids clear out the bowel.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
