Dr approved 1 month off after surgery!!!

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery on Monday and had my preop appointment yesterday. I asked how long I can get off work, he said people usually take a week or two but I could take as long as I wanted. I asked if a month was ok and he approved it

I have very good medical leave at work and will get paid the whole time.

It is nice when something finally goes in your favor.

Wow your so lucky! I have sick days but basically have to be dying to get time off. After a month you will be right back to normal. I went back to work day 2 post op and was horseback riding again a week after surgery.

You are going to blow people away when you go back to work! Good luck

That is great that you are able to do that. Me, I would not be abe to afford that and I would be bored out of my mind and probably end up sabatoging myself.

I also got a month off. I had 100% short term disability coverage, so when the surgeon asked me when I wanted to go back to work, I gave him the date following the last day of disability coverage.

It was fantastic! I felt like hell the first week and was really glad that I had more time off. The second week started to get better. Weeks 3 and 4 were sheer bliss!

You are so lucky. I'll be working with a laptop in front of me the day after surgery. I'll be home for a week (2 days will be Thanksgiving vaca) and then back to work the Monday after. You are blessed. That's awesome.

I was wondering how long people are normally out of work after surgery... I have great benefits with my company as well. My surgery date is set for Tuesday, October 19th. They told me that I would probably feel well enough to go back to work the following Monday, so I'm gonna try it. If not, then I'll take a little longer. I will get my full pay, so I am really blessed. :smile2:

Not be HonkDowner but you may need to take 5 days off under your sick time (This is def. true in Mass) before going on disability. So you may want to keep that in mind. If your company has a set number of sick days you may have to use vacation days if you are sick until your "benefit year" expires (most companies use the calendar year but some use your anniversery date). Sorry but the HR geek in me sometimes can not be restrained.

I too was approved for one month off, I tell you I needed it. this has not been easy adjusting to a new way of life and food. I'm going on week 4 and I think I am definately ok to go back to work and hopefully I am up to the challenges of being around people who don't know I am banded and be able to stand seeing them eat whatever they want. It's rough for me. The head hunger gets to me quite a bit. Good luck to you enjoy your time off I think it really does take a lot of time to get accustomed to this new way of life.

Honk,

I had even checked with HR to verify. Texas doesnt have state disability so the program is paid by the employer. I am actually entitled to 6 months medical leave. There is a 2 day waiting period for an illness, but if you were hospitalized (outpatient surgery counts), then there is no waiting period.

Plus, it is paid at full salary.

I am on 3 weeks off work, then a month of light duty, I don't go back to my full job (heavy lifting, pushing, climbing stairs, active vigorous stuff) for almost 6 weeks postop :)

YAY for down time.

PS - Alien Bandit, I horseback rode 2 weeks postop, walk was okay, but ouch a trot beat me up!

I am having surgery Jan 12th and plan on going back January 31st. The first 7 days off are unpaid or you use your vacation time. (I used my vac time up already) so short term disability kicks in after the 7 days, so I figure as long as I took one week off, I might as well go for 2!

I have school starting the week after surgery, so I figure the extra week off will be great, so that I don't overdue things!

Wow so lucky. I'm a college student and had to be moved back at school and was regularly attending classes within a week of surgery. That was a killer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
